Deadly fire in Baltimore row house kills woman, young child

BALTIMORE (AP) — Fire officials say a woman and a 5-year-old girl have perished in an early morning blaze at a row house in north Baltimore.

Fire Chief Niles Ford says a 4-year-old girl rescued from the home is in critical condition at a hospital. He says her grandmother is by her side.

The identities of the victims and their relationship to each other have not yet been specified by fire officials.

At a news conference today at City Hall, Ford described the atmosphere at the charred house as "just terrible."

In his words, "we're not supposed to be talking about funerals for children."

The cause of the deadly fire is under investigation. Ford says there was at least one smoke alarm in the house.
