Reports said two people inside a burning Halleck Avenue home early Tuesday jumped off the roof to escape the flames, then walked away before firefighters could question them.

Crews were called to the North Side home about 12:25 a.m. and found flames on the first floor. The two people inside were on the second floor when flames broke out, and they jumped from the roof there, reports said.

Damage is listed at $4,000. Fire investigator Capt. Kurt Wright said the cause is arson, and the fire was started by Molotov cocktails thrown in three spots on the first floor.

Woman evades cops

A woman evaded police on foot after a car chase came to a halt in a yard on Black Oak Lane late Monday.

Police believe the woman who was driving the vehicle fled on foot without wearing her shoes, the report said.

Police tried to pull the woman over on Monaca Avenue, but as an officer approached, she drove away, the report said.

She turned onto Myrwood Avenue and then Chaucer Lane, and drove off the road through yards on Black Oak Lane.

Police said the woman was wearing dark pants and a dark coat. Police created a perimeter in the area of where the woman fled, but could not find her, the report said. Police searched the car and found three syringes, a pipe with suspected crack-cocaine residue and plastic bags with residue.

Reports said a man on probation for a heroin trafficking conviction was arrested Monday at Fifth Avenue and Commerce Street on charges of possession of heroin and possession of drugs.

Kevin Carver, 41, of Emerson Place, faces a second-degree felony charge of possession of heroin and possession of drugs.

Reports said Carver was a passenger in a car pulled over about 6:30 p.m. for an improper turn. The owner gave consent to search the car, and Carver was searched because the vehicle smelled heavily of marijuana, reports said.

An officer found the heroin, two pills and marijuana in a bag in Carver’s buttocks, reports said. Carver is in the Mahoning County jail.
