Overtime loss snaps Phantoms’ streak

SIOUX FALLS, S.D.

Max Ellis’ goal with 66 seconds remaining forced overtime, but the Youngstown Phantoms’ six-game winning streak came to an end with Saturday’s 4-3 overtime loss to the Sioux Falls Stampede.

Mike Regush and Julian Kislin scored the Phantoms’ other goals. Michael Joyaux had two assists.

About three minutes into the overtime period, former Phantom Kevin Conley scored the game-winning goal for the Stampede, beating Wouter Peeters.

Peeters made 24 saves.

The Phantoms will be home on Thursday and Friday to play the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders at the Covelli Centre. Thursday’s game has a late morning start time.

YSU’s Jones ties school record in high jump

Youngstown State junior Abby Jones tied the school record in the high jump to lead a strong performance by members of the YSU Track and Field team on Saturday at the Golden Flash Gala hosted by Kent State at the Kent State Field House.

Jones tied the school mark of 1.73m that was held since Jan. 29, 2011, by Katrina Rettburg. Jones’ previous career-best effort was a 1.72m leap that she had last weekend at the YSU Icebreaker and during the 2017 indoor season. Jones cleared the bar on her first attempts at 1.65m and 1.70m before taking a crack at 1.73m. On her second attempt she cleared the bar to tie the school mark.

The Penguins had a strong performance in the sprints and the hurdles.

Carl Zallow took first in the 60m dash with a time of 6.86 seconds beating Ashland’s Myles Pringle by just 0.03 seconds. Amber Eles won in the blink of an eye in the 60m hurdles finals. Chad Zallow also picked up his second win of the year in the 60m high hurdles running a time of 7.71 seconds in the event final.

Frabbiele to speak to Curbstone Coaches

Tony Frabbiele, vice president and general manager of Hollywood Gaming at Mahoning Valley Race Course, will be the guest speaker at Monday’s luncheon meeting of The Curbstone Coaches at the Avion Banquet Center.

The event begins at noon and the public is welcome to attend.

Bert Gallagher, 87; was basketball coach

Former area girls basketball coach Bert Gallagher died on Nov. 15. He was 87.

Gallagher is best remembered for leading Hubbard to a state final appearance in 1982.

His career included stints as an athletic director and coach at Cardinal Mooney, Hubbard, Ashtabula St. John and Bishop Gorman (Nev.). He was inducted into Hubbard’s athletic hall of fame in 2013.

East Liverpool grad sets record in debut

East Liverpool’s Lindsay Baker set a school record in her first collegiate track meet. The redshirt-freshman tossed the shot put 50 feet, 8.5 inches to take first for Ashland on Dec. 2, setting a new mark for a throw by a freshman. She also took sixth in the hammer throw.

Baker, who won a state title in the shot put with the Potters in her senior season, was the Vindicator’s Spring Athlete of the Year in girls track and field this past spring.

Marlins ready to send Stanton to Yankees

MIAMI

After helping the New York Yankees to five World Series titles, Derek Jeter might help them win another.

The Yankees and Jeter’s Miami Marlins have agreed to a trade that would send NL MVP Giancarlo Stanton to New York, pending a physical, a person familiar with the negotiations said Saturday. Second baseman Starlin Castro would go to Miami as part of the trade, a second person familiar with the negotiations said. A third person said the Marlins would also receive prospects .
