North Elementary School hosted a “Mommy and Me“ class on Nov. 9 to get young children ready for preschool.

Tiffany Vesey ran the program in a classroom in the elementary school. She gave them time to play, read stories and craft.

They began playing in the little play area with a play set and plastic balls. Then, they gathered in a circle to listen to Vesey read them “The Big Leaf Pile“ by Norman Bridwell. The book is a part of Bridwell’s “Clifford the Big Red Dog“ book series.

Vesey pulled out a box of fake leaves after the story. The children played with the leaves and buried each other in them. They threw the leaves in the air and made leaf piles. The children helped Vesey to put all the loose leaves back in the box after they played.

Then, they did their first craft, where they made a wreath of leaves. Vesey supplied the students with glue, leaves made of construction paper and a circle to glue the leaves on.

The group played a game after the craft. Vesey made an outline of a tree on the floor using tape. She placed apples on different ends of the tree. The children walked along the tape and collected the apples.

They began their second craft, where they had aluminum foil pie pans, fake crust and cotton balls painted red to look like apples. They used the materials to make a craft apple pie. The children ran to the kitchen cook set and placed the pies in a toy stove.

Vesey gave the children a small snack and drink. After they snacked, they read a second book. Vesey read “Little Critter: The Fall Festival“ by Mercer Mayer to the children. The children played for the rest of their time following the second story.

The “Mommy and Me“ classes began last year and will continue through this school year. The program aims to help children into a school environment prior to preschool, while developing their social skills as well. The families of the children also socialize during this time.

The program runs every Thursday from 10-11:30 a.m. in the North Elementary School. Families looking to involve their child can contact the school for more information and registration.
