Man facing trial in rape case kills himself
YOUNGSTOWN
A man facing a trial in a rape case Monday killed himself at an Akron home before his trial was to start. William Toth, 46, was to go on trial in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court before Judge Lou D’Apolito on charges of rape and gross sexual imposition. He was indicted in 2015.
Toth faced a life sentence if convicted of rape. He was free on bond. The Summit County Coroner’s office said Toth died just before 7 a.m. Monday, according to 21 WFMJ-TV, The Vindicator’s broadcast partner.
Police probe break-in, attempted arson
NEWTON FALLS
Police are investigating a break-in and attempted arson at a Newton Falls councilman’s home.
Shortly after 1 p.m., someone broke into Councilman John Baryak’s home on South Canal Street, according to The Vindicator’s broadcast partner 21 WFMJ-TV.
Jewelry and other items were taken, and the suspect attempted to set a fire, police Chief John Fixler told the television station.
The department has not named any potential suspects.
YSU degree places ninth in rankings

Youngstown State University’s master of arts degree in financial economics placed ninth in the nation in new rankings released by TFE Times.
YSU ranks between Southern Illinois University and the University of Wyoming. Columbia University ranks first. Among the schools listed below YSU are Ohio University, St. Louis University, University of Maine and Utah State.
The rankings for 2018 are based on several factors, including scores on graduation admissions tests, starting salaries of graduates, undergraduate grade-point average and graduate employment rate.
Man found dead in home
LEETONIA
A Leetonia man is dead after a fire that tore through his home Saturday. According to 21 WFMJ-TV, The Vindicator’s broadcast partner, the home on the Spruce Street caught fire about 8:40 a.m.
The man’s body was found inside the home. State fire marshals still are investigating the fire.

Lit Youngstown will host three Northeast Ohio master of fine arts students and graduates at its monthly First Wednesday Readers Series on Wednesday. Christopher R. Alonso, William R. Soldan and Sara Tracey will read beginning at 7:30 p.m. at the Soap Gallery, 117 S. Champion St.

Health workshop

Representatives of Mercy Health will conduct a Health at Home workshop at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday at Taft School, 730 E. Avondale Ave. The program is part of Taft Promise Neighborhood’s continuing Wellness Wednesday series, which was recently created.
