Small-plane crash in Ravenna kills pilot

RAVENNA

The pilot of a self-assembled, one-seat Titan Tornado airplane was killed when his craft crashed about 5:30 p.m. Sunday in the backyard of a home on Nicodemus Road in Shalersville Township near state Route 44. The cause of the crash is unknown.

The identity of the pilot was not released Sunday night, said a trooper at the Ravenna Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol, which is investigating the crash along with the Federal Aviation Administration. The trooper said the airplane damaged the deck of the home but that no other injuries were reported.

Drug Chat Day

High schools nationwide can now register for the 11th annual Drugs & Alcohol Chat Day to take place Jan. 22, which occurs during National Drug & Alcohol Facts Week Æ from Jan. 22–28. Registrations are on a first-come, first-served basis and are limited to 100 schools.

The event, a live online chat between teen students and expert scientists during a 10-hour period beginning at 8 a.m., is coordinated by the National Institute on Drug Abuse in partnership with the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, both part of the National Institutes of Health.

Success After 6 gift

Gloria Jones and Fireline Inc. donated $50,000 to support the United Way of Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley’s Success After 6 initiative at Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary School in the Youngstown City School District.

Jones, her son David Jones and representatives from Fireline Inc. presented the money in memory of her late husband, Roger D. Jones.

“We are honored to receive such amazing support from Gloria Jones and her family, and hope to honor her husband through the positive work we are doing within Success After 6,” said Bob Hannon, United Way president.

The program, in seven elementary schools in Youngstown and Girard, is an early-childhood education initiative focused on students in kindergarten to sixth grade. It provides services such as tutoring, vision screenings, food pantries, family engagement events for students and their families, and after-school programming for 100 children in each school.

$500,000 YSU gift

The James and Coralie Centofanti Charitable Foundation has pledged an additional $500,000 to help support the successful Centofanti Symposium at YSU.

The symposium has brought an array of nationally and internationally recognized speakers to Youngstown over the last five years, and this funding will allow that to continue.
