YOUNGSTOWN
Mandy Hale, 36, and Jeffrey Westcott, 51, were arrested Thursday after a methamphetamine manufacturing raid at a Moore Street home. They were arraigned Friday on charges of illegal assembly, illegal manufacturing of a controlled substance, child endangering and possession of methamphetamine.
The pair are suspected of cooking methamphetamine with a 4-year-old and 8-year-old present.
Mahoning County Children Services was called to the scene. The raid was the result of a two-month investigation, police said.
Hale and Westcott are being held in the Mahoning County jail.
Dismembered body
YOUNGSTOWN
The dismembered body found by city wastewater workers Thursday in a ravine near East Earle Avenue is that of a male, police said Friday.
The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s office will conduct an autopsy to determine whether the death is a homicide.
The wastewater workers were walking along railroad tracks checking manhole covers when they came across the body shortly before 2 p.m. Thursday.
Lt. Doug Bobovnyik said detectives will review missing persons cases.
Toy giveaway
YOUNGSTOWN
Nevels Temple Church, 939 Elm St., will have a toy giveaway at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday with items for infants and kids up to age 17.
To take part in the giveaway, participants must bring valid identification and cannot be signed up at the Salvation Army.
Additionally, proof must be provided of family income, papers proving legal custody or guardianship, Social Security or medical cards for each child, or a printout from Job and Family Services.
Mill Creek upgrade
YOUNGSTOWN
Mill Creek MetroParks recently completed a new comfort station at the East Newport Boat Launch, the MetroParks announced.
The project included installation of a new restroom and concrete walkway.
The facility addresses what the MetroParks said was a need for a restroom facility at the boat launch and for the East Newport Hike & Bike Trail.
The project cost approximately $28,000.
The MetroParks thanked park board member Tom Shipka and his wife, Katie, CXT Inc., Steel Valley Contractors and Land Approach Ltd. for contributions.
Military Night
BELOIT
West Branch and Marlington school districts will recognize Gold Star families from both communities during a special Military Night at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.
West Branch will honor the family of Marine Lance Cpl. Daniel M. McVicker, and Marlington will honor the family of 1st Lt. Ashley White.
Gold Star Families are immediate relatives of members of the U.S. Armed Forces who have been killed in combat or in support of certain military activities.
The families will be recognized after the junior varsity game, which begins at 6 p.m. at Marlington High School. All military personnel will be admitted to the game free.
