MEN
No. 13 North Carolina 85, Davidson 75
CHARLOTTE, N.C.
Joel Berry II had 27 points, Luke Maye had 24 points and a career-high 17 rebounds and No. 13 North Carolina defeated Davidson. Kenny Williams added 12 points for the Tar Heels (7-1), who shot 47 percent from the field and outrebounded Davidson 54-23. Davidson (3-3) was led by 22 points and seven rebounds from LaBrae High School graduate Peyton Aldridge. The Tar Heels blew open a four-point game midway through the second half with an 11-1 run led by Sterling Manley and Theo Pinson. Manley scored on an and-one on a nifty move in the low post and followed with another short jumper. Pinson then gave the Tar Heels their first double-digit lead with two strong driving left-handed layups, including an and-one, to push the lead to 14. Maye added two put backs on the offensive glass, including a dunk that brought the crowd to its feet, to push the lead to 18. The Wildcats cut the lead late in the game, but it wasn’t enough. Davidson stayed with North Carolina for the entire first half, leading in the early going and never trailing by more than six points. Berry gave the Tar Heels a 43-37 lead heading into the locker room after scoring on a drive and then burying a 3-pointer from the right wing.
Ohio 80, Coppin State 37
ATHENS
Mike Laster scored 18 points on 8-of-12 shooting and Doug Taylor helped Ohio dominate the boards with 10 rebounds in a victory over winless Coppin State. Kevin Mickle added 15 points and five rebounds, James Gollon scored 11 with eight boards and Teyvion Kirk finished with nine points, eight rebounds and two steals for Ohio (4-3). Adam Traore and Karonn Davis had eight points apiece and Traore grabbed nine rebounds for the Eagles (0-7), who were outrebounded 56-37. Coppin State (0-7) has now dropped 10 straight games over two seasons. The Eagles shot just 21 percent (13 of 61) from the floor and connected on 3 of 25 3-pointers (12 percent). Laster and Jordan Dartis opened the game with 3-pointers for a quick 6-0 lead and the Bobcats never trailed. The lead grew to 21 on a 3-point play by Taylor with 11 minutes left in the period. Mickle scored five in an 8-0 run for the Bobcats to close out the half and up their lead to 45-17.
Pittsburgh 76, Duquesne 64
PITTSBURGH
Ryan Luther scored 16 points and grabbed nine rebounds and Pittsburgh pulled away late for a victory over Duquesne in the annual City Game. Parker Stewart added a career-high 14 points for the Panthers (4-4), who won their fourth straight and avenged a rare loss to the Dukes a year ago. Marcus Carr had 15 points and five assists for Pitt. Shamiel Stevenson chipped in 13 points as Pitt improved to 54-32 in a series that dates back to 1932. Mike Lewis II led the Dukes (2-3) with 20 points and Eric Williams Jr. finished with 18 points and eight rebounds but Duquesne wore down late. The Dukes never got any closer as Pitt moved the ball crisply to take control. Luther and point guard Jonathan Milligan, the only two holdovers from a Pitt team that lost to the Dukes for the first time since 2000 last December, provided an emotional spark. Luther slapped his hip after an early 3-pointer and when the Dukes threatened in the second half, he got in the paint and went to work. A pair of layups during a 14-4 surge gave the Panthers all the breathing room they would need.
Purdue 80, Maryland 75
COLLEGE PARK, MD.
Isaac Haas scored 21 points, Dakota Mathias added 20 and Purdue opened defense of its Big Ten regular season title by holding off Maryland. The Boilermakers (7-2, 1-0) blew a 14-point lead, then let a 10-point cushion shrink to 62-60 before Mathias and the 7-foot-3 Haas took over. Mathias made pair of foul shots and Haas had seven points in a 10-2 surge that finally gave Purdue some separation. It was 76-68 with 58 seconds left before the Terrapins launched their final comeback. Anthony Cowan made a 4-point play, then a 3-point play to cut the gap to 78-75. Shooting with a chance to tie it, Jared Nickens missed badly on a jumper from the corner, and P.J. Thompson clinched it with two free throws.
