Poland Dobbins Elementary School hosted its book fair at Barnes and Noble in Boardman on Nov. 16.
The students got a chance to explore and enjoy the book store. The school’s PTO worked with the store to organize a number of events for the students.
“My biggest hope is [the book fair] is successful, people are happy and they would welcome us back in the future,“ Heather Trolio, PTO chair for the book fair, said
Trolio received help from 13 volunteers and said she feels very fortune to have assistance from “a great group of volunteers.“ The volunteers manned different stations throughout the store.
In the center of the store, the PTO set up a memory match game and a magnet craft. They also had a scavenger hunt that the students could participate in all night. The students who found everything in the hunt received a paw print that they could place on the Poland Bulldog mascot.
Throughout the night, members of the Poland district read selections from the book “Wonder“ by Raquel J. Palacio. Superintendent David Janofa read the first selection, Poland Union principal Michael Masucci read the second, and then Poland Middle School assistant principal Lisa Iberis and former news personality Julie Bercik read the final portions of the night.
The school also made use of the Starbucks cafe. They had their school mascot and YSU’s Pete the Penguin mascot greet people near the cafe. Starbucks also offered a special peppermint drink called the “Wonderful Bulldog.“
The PTO invited the PSHS Saxophone Quartet and the PSHS A Cappella Ensemble to perform separately in the middle of the library.
This is the first year Dobbins and Barnes and Noble have worked together for a book fair. In the past, they had Scholastic book fairs. The PTO wanted to do something different and explored multiple avenues and decided to go with Barnes and Noble. The event helped fund raise for the PTO.
