Mahoning County Master Gardener Volunteer garden art series continues
Keep the holidays festive with the Mahoning County Master Gardener Volunteers while learning how to make decorative flower pots. During this program, which is part of the Garden Art Series, participants will learn how to create decorative pots using alcohol and inks. All materials and pots will be provided for all participants. Master Gardener Volunteers Lil Quaranta and Pam Baytos will share their expertise and experiences in making painted pots and creating unique decorations. This program will take place on Dec. 4 at the Mahoning County Extension Office, located at 490 S. Broad St. in Canfield, from 1-3 p.m. Registration is $20 per person. Join a gift wrapping fundraiser with the friends of the library
On Dec. 8 from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m., the Friends and Junior Friends of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County will be gift wrapping at Barnes & Noble in Boardman. Tips from this fundraising event go to the Friends of PLYMC for children and teen programs. Come out and support the Friends. If you make a purchase at Barnes & Noble on Dec. 8, tell the cashier that you want to support the Friends of PLYMC, so that a percentage of the sale will go to the Friends. Canfield High School junior has second book published
A year after the release of his first book, “The Day to Day Revelation,” in September of 2016, Canfield High School junior Vincent Patierno is preparing to have his second book released through Amazon this December. Patierno’s newest project, “This is Not Real Life,” is “a collection of thoughts, feelings and lessons,” as he describes. The concepts of each chapter allow for readers to search for fulfillment in their own lives and search for the components that truly matter the most, such as the values of faith, family, friends and fun. “This is Not Real Life” is available nation-wide and throughout Europe on Dec. 1.
Build with Legos at the library
Meet and enjoy creating Lego designs at the Canfield library on Dec. 2 at 2:30 p.m. Legos will be provided. This event is for children who are ages 6 and up.
Gotta Move Story Time at the library
Every Wednesday at 10 a.m. and again at 11:30 a.m., join the Canfield library for a story time for children ages 2-5 who are accompanied by a care giver. Join in for a variety of musical and movement activities that appeal to the “young and restless,” stimulate brain development and motivate language learning. Adults and children: get ready to act out stories and rhymes, sing and dance, talk and play.
Join a chair yoga class at the library
Chair Yoga is sponsored by the Friends of PLYMC. It is $10 a class, and you can pay as you attend. Class meets every Friday and dress comfortably. For more information, contact the Development Office at 330-740-6086.
Join the Nutcracker Sweets Party at the library
Get the holidays cracking by attending the Nutcracker Sweets Party at the Canfield library on Dec. 9 at 2:30 p.m. Featuring activities and games inspired by the classic story, the beautiful music of Tchaikovsky, and of course, a candy bar, this program will surely satisfy your sweet tooth. This party is for children of all ages.
Basic Computer Class to meet in December
Learn very basic computer skills at the Canfield library on Dec. 8 at 10 a.m. This is a beginner’s class that will cover use of a mouse, computer terms and simple Internet use. Space is limited and registration is required. Call 330-744-8636 to register at this program for adults.
Join movie night at the library
Join the Canfield library for a Thursday Night Movie on Dec. 7 at 6 p.m. where they will be watching a newly released DVD. Feel free to bring your own small snacks and drinks. This event is for adults and children. Those under the age of 7 must be accompanied by an adult. The movie will be either PG or PG-13.
Stephen King Constant Readers Club to meet
Join other Stephen King fans at the Canfield library on Dec. 5 at 6:30 p.m. to discuss his riveting stories, as well as other captivating tales by his peers. This month the reading will be “Pet Sematary,” followed by a preview of new and exciting upcoming titles.
Give a high five to the dogs
Come and read to the Canfield library’s favorite therapy dogs. Give them a “High Five” to welcome them to the library. Bring your own book, or the library will find one for you. School aged children can read to the therapy dogs the first Wednesday of each month at 6 p.m. Therapy dogs provided by Pawz for People, a Community Partner of Pet Partners, local Pet Therapy group.
Mahoning Valley Corvettes joins in with Salem car cruise for event
The call to take over The Salem Super cruise, Salem’s largest annual event attracting thousands, was recently answered by The Mahoning Valley Corvettes. The non-profit car club dates back to 1962 including members from every surrounding community and Salem. Many of the club members have enjoyed the Salem Super Cruise and will now partner with the City of Salem to put on the event entering its 14th year. The Salem Super Cruise is open to all cars and trucks, not just Corvettes. Motorcycles are also welcome. The weekend benefits the Second Harvest Foodbank, which feeds many hungry local families. The event will take place June 7-10 and will feature activities, some free, including a parade, car show, food, live bands and more. The Mahoning Valley Corvettes look forward to partnering with the City of Salem to provide a this weekend for the entire family.
Canfield Senior Class Craft Show has 29th year
The 29th annual Canfield High School Senior Class Craft Show will take place on Dec. 2 from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. at the high school. There will be 200 different and unique vendors setting up shop. Students from the class of 2018 will be assisting with all aspects of the event. Parking and admission are free. Overflow parking is available. GA to meet twice this week
Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting is offered every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another is offered every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (in Cornersburg). Both meetings begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and last about 1-1/2 hours. Those who believe gambling has affected any part of their lives are urged to attend.
