Yoga session invites YSU students to try ... Namaste at the Fountain

YOUNGSTOWN
Meditation and mindfulness was the mantra for students stretching by the fountain at Youngstown State University on Wednesday afternoon.
Namaste at the Fountain, a yoga session, invited students to preview Namaste in the YO, a second annual event in which community members participate in a yoga class at the Watson and Tressel Training Site.
“It’s about finding yourself through your mind, body and peace,” said Tori Korda, YSU graduate student and an Andrews Student Recreation and Wellness Center Group X intern.
In addition, Namaste at the Fountain allowed rec center employees to let other students know what the center has to offer.
Yoga instructor Leanna Hartsough, a rec center employee and YSU graduate student, said she finds that yoga even helps her in her studies and as she teaches Communication Foundations.
“I think it definitely helps with relaxing and communication and bettering body language,” Hartsough said.
Freshman student Dagmar Stahl said as an avid yogi she appreciated the opportunity to start the semester by practicing stress-relieving techniques.
“I started doing it last year and doing it just really helped me with calming down and dealing with anxieties,” she said.
Korda agreed.
“Overall, it’s just a great stress reliever, especially for college students,” Korda said.
Hartsough said the environment of the Welcome Week event breeds positivity due to its nonjudgmental atmosphere.
“We are all just here working toward the same goal with the same activity and it’s just peaceful,” she said.
Senior student Marissa Snyder said Hartsough couldn’t have been more accurate in her statement.
“I love that we are doing more things at YSU to show off our beautiful facilities,” she said.
In the last few years, Snyder said she’s been privileged to see YSU grow in its variety of Welcome Week activities and activities in general.
“It just seems like YSU has really upped its game,” she said.
