Cops probe accident

NEW SPRINGFIELD

The Canfield Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating an accident about 9:50 p.m. Tuesday on state Route 170 that killed a New Middletown man.

A news release from the post said Oliver C. Holley-Fry, 37, was driving north on Route 170 when his van went off the road, re-entered the roadway and ran into a utility pole.

Holley-Fry died from his injuries at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital, the patrol release said. The release said alcohol is suspected as a factor in the crash. Holley-Fry was not wearing a seat belt.

Trial delayed

A woman accused of duct-taping her 11-year-old son to a chair had her trial delayed Wednesday.

Susan Malysa, 32, of Boardman, was set to stand trial in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court on Tuesday, but Judge R. Scott Krichbaum gave attorneys additional time to prepare the case. The judge told attorneys to schedule a pretrial hearing within 30 days with a trial the following week.

Malysa faces three counts of felony child endangering.

Township police arrested Butler Johnson V, 25, of Youngstown on drug charges after a traffic stop on Shields Road early Wednesday.

According to a police report, an officer reported finding cash, an empty pack of prescription opioids, two cellphones and pieces of plastic bags “commonly used to package narcotics.”

Then, the officer reported finding “several white rocks and powder” where Johnson had been sitting in the police cruiser. A field test confirmed the white rock was cocaine, according to the report. Police also reported finding a pill in Johnson’s pocket that was found to be a prescription opioid painkiller.

He is charged with two counts of drug possession and one count of tampering with evidence, according to court records.

Committee meeting

YOUNGSTOWN

Youngstown City Council will host a finance committee meeting at 5 p.m. today to discuss the fire department’s overtime budget and all other business the committee deems necessary. The meeting will take place on the sixth floor in the council caucus room at city hall, 26 S. Phelps St.
