Art of Marc Ross on display at Butler

YOUNGSTOWN

An exhibition by Marc Ross titled “Paintings for Plum Ridge” opens Sunday at the Butler Institute of American Art, 524 Wick Ave., and runs through Nov. 12. A reception for the artist will take place Sept. 10 from 1 to 3 p.m. at the museum.

“The art of Marc Ross pays tribute to the aesthetics of Minimalism, a movement which celebrated simplicity and the power of color,” said Louis Zona, director of the Butler. “However the minimalistic paintings of Ross are not just about saluting past philosophies. They instead reveal a technical facility in surface and color rarely seen today.”

Ross was born and raised in Cleveland. After living in Chicago and Baltimore, he returned to Ohio 18 years ago with his wife and son. He received his bachelor’s degree from Ohio University, attended graduate school at the University of Chicago, completed his master’s at Kent State University and received a degree in education from Ashland University.

Ross has exhibited in numerous venues, including the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Butler, the Klutznick National Jewish Museum, the Southern Ohio Museum and various galleries in Cleveland, Chicago, Pittsburgh, San Francisco, Baltimore, New York and Washington, D.C.

He has been an adjunct art instructor at Cuyahoga Community College, a lecturer in the art department of the Ohio State University and a drawing instructor at the Columbus College of Art and Design. Presently he is a full-time faculty member at a Gahanna Lincoln High School.
