Dogs provide delight at Puppy Palooza

Welcome Week continued spreading good vibes for the second week of school, with four-legged friends scampering back and forth outside of Youngstown State University’s Andrews Student Recreation and Wellness Center.
Monday afternoon’s Puppy Palooza was the host to several adoptable dogs helping students to de-stress, find community-service opportunities and spread the word about adoption of the furry guests of honor.
Jessica MacMurchy, Animal Charity Humane Society humane agent, said she really enjoys that Puppy Palooza is a twofold experience.
“We’re finding that a lot of students want to volunteer and do what they can to help with the dogs,” she said. “In turn, it gets them some experience working, which helps us, and makes class a little better for them today.”
Another benefit of the event for Animal Charity, MacMurchy said, is the communication aspect.
“It’s also nice to spread the word about our organization,” she said.
It’s for that reason Lisa Hill, Animal Charity executive director, said she’s happy YSU asked the organization to come this year.
“It’s a wonderful way to get volunteers, both students and the people they talk to,” she said. “It’s also really nice for us to get to come and see all the students get a break in their day and reduce their stress levels with some happy dogs.”
Student Emily Reider, who is originally from Massachusetts, enjoyed spending time with the dogs between classes.
“They kind of remind me of home,” she said.
Student Liz Angeletti mirrored Reider’s sentiment.
“It just puts me in a good mood,” Angeletti said.
Student Joseph Smith said he hopes YSU keeps up the tradition.
“It makes us happy,” said fellow student Alysia Mitchell.
