AUSTINTOWN

The Mahoning County District Board of Health is offering the six-week Diabetes Empowerment Education Program (DEEP) from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. beginning Sept. 13 at board offices, 50 Westchester Drive.

The DEEP program is for people with type 1 and type 2 diabetes or pre-diabetes who are seeking information and motivation for better health. It encourages small lifestyle changes while learning about diabetes and the way it affects health.

The program, free of charge, is a series of weekly interactive small-group workshops. For information and to register, call 330-270-2855, ext. 109.

Accreditation status

ROOTSTOWN

The College of Pharmacy at Northeast Ohio Medical University, which celebrated its 10-year anniversary in 2016, was granted continued accreditation status through 2024-25, the longest accreditation period a college can receive from the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) Board of Directors.

Richard J. Kasmer, vice president for academic affairs and dean of the College of Pharmacy, noted that “the on-site visit was preceded by a self-study process that involved participation from faculty, staff, students, alumni, preceptors, partners and university representatives for more than a year, the first time for completing a full self-study that was faculty driven.”

Techniques of Reiki

SALEM

Professional massage therapist and martial arts enthusiast Jesse Thorne, associated with the Massage Cafe LMT in Canfield, will explain techniques of Reiki, a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation, during a program at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 13 at the Salem Public Library, 821 E. State St., Salem.

Level III trauma

WARREN

Trumbull Memorial Hospital has been re-verified as a Level III Trauma Center by the American College of Surgeons (ACS), signifying that TMH has consecutively demonstrated its ability to provide prompt treatment of traumatic injuries and other complex life-threatening conditions.

Trumbull Memorial sees more than 35,000 patients in the emergency room annually. Trauma verification is conducted by the Verification Review Committee, an ad hoc committee of the Committee on Trauma of the ACS.

Rabies shot clinic

YOUNGSTOWN

The Youngstown City Health District is offering a rabies shot clinic for dogs, cats and ferrets from 1 to 3 p.m. Sept. 16 in the Oak Hill Renaissance Place parking deck, 345 Oak Hill Ave., Youngstown. Cats and ferrets must be in cages and dogs on leashes or otherwise restrained. Rabies vaccination is required in Youngstown. No appointment is necessary.

Services are donated by Dr. Lisa Kurtz. Each rabies shot is $6 per animal. For information, call the Youngstown City Health District at 330-743-3333, ext. 230.

Rabies is a preventable, potentially deadly, viral disease most often transmitted through bites and scratches from unvaccinated pets, strays and wildlife.
