Band night to be Aug. 28
Austintown Fitch Falcon Stadium, located at 4560 Falcon Dr. in Austintown, will be the location of the 2017 Austintown Band Night on Aug. 28 at 7 p.m. Featured Bands include Youngstown State University, Boardman, Canfield, McDonald, Springfield, Ursuline, Girard, Wickliffe and, of course, Austintown Fitch.
Friendly Squares to have demonstration at Canfield Fair
The Niles Friendly Squares will be performing square dance demonstrations at the Canfield Fair on Aug. 31 from 7-8 p.m. and Sept. 3 from 2-3 p.m. on the stage located in front of the International Building. A new year of weekly square dance lessons will begin Sept. 12 from 7-9 p.m. The Tuesday evening sessions will run through December. There is a nominal fee of $6 per person per lesson. Paladin Brewing hosts anniversary celebration
Paladin Brewing, located at 6520 Mahoning Ave. in Austintown, opened to the public on Aug. 22, 2015. They are hosting a Two-Year Anniversary celebration on Aug. 26 at the brewery. Plans for the event include new and limited edition brews, free food, T-shirt giveaways, custom shirts and more.
Playtime at your library
Prepare for kindergarten through play at this event at the Austintown library on Sept. 18 at 6:30 p.m. Read a story and have fun with developmentally appropriate games and activities that you can do with your child to help them get ready for kindergarten. Activities will vary at each program. This program is for ages 2-6. All children must be accompanied by an adult.
Pre-kindergarten story time
This program, taking place on every Wednesday in September at 11:30 a.m. at the Austintown library, is for 4- and 5-year-olds to help develop pre-literacy and kindergarten readiness skills. You will use books, stories, rhymes, music, movement and crafts to help your child get ready for kindergarten.
Bonding with babies and books
This event, taking place on every Tuesday in September at 10 a.m. at the Austintown library, is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months-old. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize.
Tales and talk for 2’s and 3’s
Join the Austintown library every Wednesday in September at 10 a.m. for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
Authors and their worlds
Match the authors with the worlds they created during the month of September at the Austintown library. Turn into the librarian and receive a prize. This event is for school-age children in grades K-6.
“Dragons Love Tacos”
Go to the Austintown library on Sept. 27 at 6:30 p.m. for a program on “Dragons Love Tacos.” Based on the best-selling books by Adam Rubin, the library’s fiesta includes story time, games and a taco craft bar. This is nacho average program, so bring the whole family. Snacks will be served. This event is for children of all ages.
Family Game Night
Join the Austintown library on Sept. 21 from 6-8 p.m. for all or part of its two-hour game night. They will have everything for you and your family to enjoy together, including board games, giant games, video games and a basketball game.
Gotta Move Story Time
This event, taking place every Thursday in September at 10 a.m. at the Austintown library, is for children, ages 2-5, who are accompanied by a caregiver. Join them for a variety of musical and movement activities that appeal to the “young and restless,” stimulate brain development and motivate language learning. Adults and children, get ready to act out stories and rhymes, sing and dance, talk and play.
September craft
There will be a grab and go craft for September during regular hours at the Austintown library. Make a craft to take home. This event is for children of all ages.
Guess the picture book
Guess the picture book from the cut up cover during regular hours at the Austintown library throughout September. One winner chosen at random from correct entries. Children of all ages are welcome to enter.
Read to Reese
On the second Saturday of each month, read to Reese, a therapy dog from Pet Partners, at the Austintown library. The September event will take place on Sept. 9 at 11 a.m. Bring your own book, or the librarians will find one for you, and read to a furry friend. Registration is required. Space is limited. Lego my library
Meet and enjoy creating Lego designs at the Austintown library on Sept. 6 at 6 p.m. Legos will be provided. This event is for children, ages 6 and up.

Celebrate the Lego Ninjago movie release with all things Lego on Sept. 19 at 6:30 p.m. at the Austintown library. Enjoy games, a craft and more. This event is for school-age children.

American Association of University Women of Youngstown will be resuming their meetings for the year on Sept. 9 at Sunrise Assisted Living at 10 a.m. Leah Sakacs will be presenting information on the group’s new affiliate Young Women’s Task Force. To celebrate the 2017 movie release of “It,” based on the 1986 Stephen King novel of the same name, the library be hiding “evil clowns” in the adult and teen areas of the library. Submit the number of clowns you spotted, and a random winner drawn from the correct entries will earn a prize. This event is for teens. This event will take place during the month of September during regular library hours.
Strategy board games at the library

Learn to create your own handmade cards using stamps, punches and other fun tools on Sept. 14 at 6:30 p.m. and Sept. 15 at 11 a.m. at the Austintown library. If you love books or are looking for a good read, check out the Page Turners book club on Sept. 20 from 6-7 p.m. at the Austintown library. Hear what others are reading and share your favorite read, or just come in and join the fun. This event is for adults.
Weekly square dance lessons to begin on Sept. 12
The Niles Friendly Squares, a local square dance group dedicated to keeping alive the uniquely American art form of square dancing, will begin a new year of weekly square dance lessons. The introductory session will be on Sept. 12 from 7-9 p.m. Each session builds upon the previous session and will include learning new steps along with plenty of review and practice each week to help attendees master the moves. The sessions are designed to cover all the steps in the Basic Square Dance Program. Gene Hammond will be the instructor. The Tuesday evening sessions will run through December with a second session beginning Jan. 9. There is a fee of $6 per person per lesson. The Friendly Squares also sponsors monthly dances with alternating dances, or tips, for new dancers to practice their skills, as well as tips for more experienced dancers. All the lessons and monthly dances take place at the Niles SCOPE Center, located at 14 E. State St. in Niles. Alumni association sells raffle tickets
The Austintown Alumni Association is selling raffle tickets for this year’s scholarship and mini grant fundraiser. Members are selling a book of six raffle tickets for $5 or individual tickets for $1 each. The first prize is $500 cash, second prize contains gift certificates to local businesses worth at least $200 and third prize is a dinner for two at Rachel’s Restaurant and a dinner for two at The Manor, valued at $50 each. Proceeds from this project support the association’s scholarship fund, which awarded $6,000 to Fitch seniors who graduated in June, and $1,000 in mini grants to teachers who applied for these grants. The winners of this year’s raffle will be announced during half time at the football game at Falcon Stadium on Sept. 22. Tickets can be purchased until half time or by contacting Austintown Alumni Association president Lynn Larson at 330-518-5727.
Volunteers sought for heritage day
In preparation for its ninth annual Polish Heritage Day on Aug. 27 from 11 a.m. until 8 p.m. at St. Anne’s Church on 4310 Kirk Road in Youngstown (at the corner of Kirk and Raccoon Roads), organizers are inviting the public to help make the event happen. Volunteers of every age, skill and ability are welcome. Help is needed for everything from set up and take down to ticket sales, helping with the pierogi-eating contest and assisting in cultural display and children’s areas. Various shifts are available. Boardman Park to host Ace Race disc golf tournament
Whether you are new to disc golf or you are a pro, don’t miss Ace Race 2017, taking place on Sept. 9 at 8:30 a.m. at Boardman Park. Each year, disc golfers from around the globe gather at their local disc golf courses for one purpose: to throw aces (a hole in one). Tees are moved up so holes are generally between 100 and 150 feet, making every hole “aceable” and allowing players of all abilities to participate. The entry fee is $40 and includes lunch, two Ace Race discs, that you must use that day, and other disc golf gear. The grand prize will be a disc golf bag along with discs to fill it. Additional prizes will be awarded for the longest drive, closest to the pin, a putting competition and a 50/50 raffle. Register online at boardmandiscgolf.weebly.com or in the Boardman Park office. Austintown Park to have summer concerts
The 2017 Summer Concerts in the Park series, presented by Hollywood Gaming Mahoning Valley Race Course, at Austintown Park will soon begin. Concerts will take place on Tuesday evenings, from 7-8:30 p.m., weather permitting. Concerts will include Sound Bite on Aug. 22. Austintown Park is located at 6000 Kirk Road in Austintown.

GA to meet twice this week
Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting is offered every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another is offered every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (in Cornersburg). Both meetings begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and last about 1-1/2 hours. Those who believe gambling has affected any part of their lives are urged to attend. Ten thousand pages of YA
This month, you can combine forces in an attempt to read 10,000 pages of YA books. Tell a librarian at the center desk at the Austintown library that you’d like to add pages to the total. If you participate, you may be eligible for a September pizza party if they meet their goal. Make sure you fill out a contact form. This event is for teens in grades 7-12.
