White’s HR leads Batavia over Scrappers

Harrison White hit a solo home run in the top of the 11th inning to help lead the Batavia Muckdogs to a 6-4 win over the Mahoning Valley Scrappers on Wednesday.

The Muckdogs later scored three more runs in the inning, including a single by Tyler Curtis that scored Lazaro Alonso.

Mahoning Valley had a runner on first in the bottom of the 11th, but Simeon Lucas grounded out to end the game.

Brent Wheatley (2-1) got the win with two innings of scoreless, one-hit relief while Jonathan Teaney (2-1) took the loss in the New York-Penn League game.

Ohio State backup QB out with broken hand

Ohio State backup quarterback Joe Burrow will be sidelined indefinitely after breaking his throwing hand in practice.

An Ohio State spokesman says Burrow, a redshirt sophomore, had surgery after breaking a bone in his right hand during practice on Monday.

Burrow backed up J.T. Barrett last season and was competing for the job with Dwayne Haskins in preseason camp. The winner was expected to have an advantage in the quarterback derby next year to replace Barrett.

After redshirting the 2015 season, Burrow played in five games last season in mop-up duty. He completed 22 of 28 passes for 226 yards and two touchdowns.

ESPN broadcaster Lee will work YSU game

BRISTOL, Conn.

ESPN broadcaster Robert Lee will not work Virginia’s season opener because of recent violence in Charlottesville sparked by the decision to remove a statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee.

A spokeswoman for ESPN says Lee has been moved to Youngstown State’s game at Pittsburgh on the ACC Network on Sept. 2. The network says the decision was made “as the tragic events in Charlottesville were unfolding, simply because of the coincidence of his name.”

Plans to remove a statue of Lee led to a protest in Charlottesville earlier this month that attracted what is believed to be the largest group of white nationalists to come together in a decade. Violent clashes erupted between a large gathering of white nationalists and hundreds of counter protesters.

ESPN says the decision to put Lee on another game was made “collectively.” It also says it’s “a shame that this is even a topic of conversation.”

Facebook to stream college games this fall

Facebook has struck a deal for exclusive rights to live stream 15 college football games this season, beginning next week.

The agreement with Stadium, a digital sports network, gives Facebook the rights to six Mountain West games and nine Conference USA games. The games will not be televised. The first game will match Marshall of C-USA against Miami of Ohio on Sept. 2. Later that day, San Diego State of the Mountain West will host UC Davis on Facebook’s Stadium: Live College Football show page.

Bourdais to race 14 weeks after accident

INDIANAPOLIS

Sebastien Bourdais will return to IndyCar competition this weekend after a three-month recovery from an accident at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

The Frenchman fractured his pelvis and right hip during a crash while qualifying for the Indianapolis 500. A return this season seemed to be a stretch, but Bourdais vowed to race in next month’s season finale.

Bourdais will do even better than that. His rapid recovery gives him his seat back for the final three races of the season, starting Saturday night at Gateway Motorsports Park. He had actually been cleared to race earlier this month, but Dale Coyne Racing allowed replacement driver Esteban Gutierrez to drive last weekend at Pocono Raceway.

Bourdais is a four-time series champion.
