Mom facing charges

LIBERTY

The mother of a 3-year-old boy with a gunshot wound will be charged by Liberty Township police with child endangering, a third-degree felony; and obstructing official business, a misdemeanor.

Kendrasia Johneisha May is the mother of the boy who was taken to the hospital Aug. 13 with a gunshot wound to the leg. Police were told the boy shot himself, but an expert in interviewing children told police it is unlikely the boy shot himself.

The incident occurred at 3015 North Gate Ave. Liberty Police Chief Richard Tisone said the investigation into the incident is ongoing.

The boy was released from the hospital to the custody of a relative.

Parade fundraiser

YOUNGSTOWN

To raise money for the Seventh Annual Nonviolence Parade, there will be a pasta dinner from noon to 3 p.m. Sunday at Richard Brown Memorial United Methodist Church, 1205 Elm St.

The cost is $8 for adults and $5 for children 12 and younger. The dinner is available for take-out or eating in.

Getting help with SSI

Representatives from Social Security will be available to answer the numerous questions about Social Security from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the Dorothy Day House, 620 Belmont Ave.

The roundtable program will discuss possible benefits, SSI, issues concerning parents and children, as well as any other concerns. For information, call 330-301-8698.

Crime-watch meeting

The Beaver Police Department will host its next crime-watch meeting at 7 p.m. today at Shepherd of the Valley (main building), 9111 Sharrott Road (corner of Western Reserve Road). Officer Chris Albert and his police dog partner, Hero, will be the guests.

Sunday library hours

YOUNGSTOWN

Beginning Sept. 10, five libraries in the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County system will open on Sundays from 1 to 5 p.m. The fall and winter hours run through May 20, 2018.

For the first year, Newport Library, 3730 Market St., will join Austintown, Boardman, Canfield and Poland branches in offering Sunday hours.

Mathews band night

VIENNA

Mathews Music Boosters and the Mathews Marching Mustangs will host an array of marching styles performed by area bands at the annual Mathews band night at 7 p.m. Saturday at Booster Field, 4095 Sheridan Drive, off state Route 193.

Performing bands will be Windham, Chalker, Brookfield, Struthers and Mathews.

Tickets at the door are $5 for adults, $3.50 for senior citizens and free for kids under 5.
