Shakespeare in the park at Morley Pavilion

YOUNGSTOWN

Mahoning Valley Players will stage “Romeo and Juliet” at 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday as its annual Shakespeare in the park production at Morley Pavilion in Mill Creek Park.

The tragedy is being directed by Robert Dennick Joki. Admission is free. The production will be presented in traditional style. Morley Pavilion is in the Wick Recreation Area, off McCollum Road on the West Side.

Carpatho-Rusyn group plans its annual ‘Vatra’

The fifth annual Carpatho-Rusyn/Slovak “Vatra” (bonfire) picnic will take place Saturday at Infant Jesus of Prague Byzantine Catholic Church, 7754 South Ave. The event replicates a traditional fall Vatra as celebrated by the Slavic people in the Carpathian Mountains.

The kitchen will be open from noon to 8 p.m., offering “slanina” (smoked bacon) for roasting in the fire and eating with diced tomatoes and peppers on rye bread; holubki, pirohi, haluski with dumplings, kolbasi, vinegar cucumber and sweet onion salad.

The event will include genealogy material and ethnic sales tables. The bonfire will burn into the evening with music by Dean Poloka, Tom Katrenich, Bob Barko and Company. There will be a Byzantine Catholic Divine Liturgy at the church at 6 p.m. For info, call Jim Basista at 330-544-0107.

Comedy, magic with Eric Thompson

A comedy and magic show, featuring Eric Thompson, will take place Saturday at 8 p.m. at Nic’s Lounge, 1629 N. Main St. Admission is $5.
