Groups celebrate 45th anniversary of Title IX

YOUNGSTOWN

Young Women’s Task Force and American Association of Women of Youngstown recently sponsored a celebration of the 45th anniversary of Title IX at the YWCA in Youngstown.

Dr. Cryshanna Jackson Leftwich presented her perspective on how Title IX has been working in the classroom and on campuses.

Title IX is the federal civil rights law that prohibits sex discrimination in education. The National Women’s Law Center works to eliminate and prevent barriers to students’ success in school.

It is best known for breaking down barriers in sports for women and girls but also opening the door for girls to pursue math and science, requiring fair treatment for pregnant and parenting students and protecting students from bullying and sexual harassment.

Both of these women’s groups promote fair and equal access to education, health care and voter registration; fight for fair pay and reproductive rights; and educate and advocate for an end to human trafficking and violence against men and women.
