Community football is about giving back

Fanfare:

Hats off to Keland Logan for spearheading this fund raiser to help rekindle the Volney Rogers football league. During the 1950’s, Farmer Scholl, then the Mill Creek Park director, started the first area youth football league. Hundreds of young men learned the value of team play, the proper technics and lifelong friendships.

Ten former St. Brendan’s 105-pound players have gotten together to give back to the league and coaches that helped give them an opportunity to become outstanding people. We would like to challenge all Volney Rogers players to team up and give back a little.

I would like to thank our group of 10 Golden Bears for their efforts:

Ray Bryia (RB, Chaney/YSU), Bob Krok (OT, Chaney/YSU), Tony Delbene (RB, Wilson/YSU), Jim Donlin (RB, Ursuline/YSU), Matt Giambattista (TE, Ursuline/YSU), Bob Snyder (OG, Ursuline/YSU), Denny Kiliany (LB, Ursuline/Notre Dame), Bill Angle (LB, Ursuline/Wake Forest), Richard Angle (RB, Ursuline/Missouri) and our coach, the late Ron Posey (Chaney/Kent State).

All these former players went on to play City Series football with and against each other as competitors, but always friends to the end. I am sure the Volney league and our coach had a lot to do with it.

I would like to thank the 10 former St. Brendan’s Volney Rogers 105-pound players for pitching in to purchase 12 new helmets.

We all got our football start on Saturday morning at Volney Rogers field playing the Fosterville Midgets, St. Christine’s, Star Chrome Cleaners and Williamson Tigers. Farmer Scholl was blessing to the city.

Football taught us all how to win in life, give back to the community and how to develop lifelong friends. We wish Keland Logan and the Volney Rogers Helmet Drive success.

Richard Angle, St. Brendan Golden Bear
