YSU anglers finish fourth in competition

YOUNGSTOWN

Youngstown State University Bass Fishing Club members Mike Soots and Jonathan Creed earned fourth place in a regional college fishing competition and now qualify to compete in the YETI Fishing League Worldwide College Fishing National Championship, to be scheduled in spring 2018.

At the regional contest, the YETI FLW Northern Conference at Lake Chautauqua, N.Y., on July 27, Soots and Creed caught five largemouth bass with a total weight of just over 14 pounds, winning a $500 prize for their club. The top 10 teams qualified for the national competition.

Youth shooting

The coaches for the Western Reserve Fish & Game Association’s Junior Marksmanship Program announced the fall Shooting and Safety Program for students age 10 to 18.

The cost for the program is $10 per week. Classes will take place at the club’s facility, 1058 W. Third Street. The first class is set for Sept. 11 at 5:30 p.m.

The program is an eight-week course that covers rifle safety, proper gun handling, basic marksmanship, gun maintenance and Ohio wildlife rules.

Participants will work four weeks with competition-level air rifles and four weeks with competition-level small-bore .22 rifles.

All equipment will be provided, including eye and ear protection, shooting jackets, ammunition and more. Parents or guardians must accompany participants to the first session. Candidates with an interest in competitive Olympic-style target shooting may be invited to join the Western Reserve Eagles Jr. Rifle Team.

NRA Youth Sportsfest

Vienna

The Trumbull County 4-H Shooting Sports Pioneers Club will host a free NRA Youth Sportsfest at the Fish & Game Club of Vienna from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 23.

The event will teach basic gun and archery safety by providing hands-on experience to youths age 9 to 18. A picnic lunch will be provided. No guns owned by the participants are to be brought to the event.

Military shoot

The Western Reserve Fish & Game Association, 1058 W. Third St., will have a military shoot on its 100-yard outdoor range on the third Saturday of each month until late fall.

The cost is $5 per shooter, and participants must provide their own ammunition. AR shooters are encouraged to participate.

The New Middletown Farmers and Sportsmen’s Club, 3341 E. Calla Road, will have a CCW class from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Oct. 7.

Cost is $90, which includes all classroom material, targets, coffee and muffins in the morning and a light lunch.

A safe, functioning pistol, 50 rounds of ammunition, and eye and ear protection are required.
