Varsity wins tourney

The Poland boys varsity soccer team started the exhibition season after a successful summer tournament schedule going 4-0 in Canfield tournament, 2-1 at Ravenna friendlies and 4-1-1 at an Alliance tournament that’s invitation only for top teams in Northeast Ohio. The team, coached by Brian Garcar and junior varsity coach Bill Storkel, features 10 seniors, four juniors and five sophomores. On Aug. 9, the team played its first exhibition game playing at Boardman and tying 1-1. Senior Reed McCreery scored the only goal during a penalty kick with 1 minute remaining in the game. In game 2 of the week, the Bulldogs beat Austintown Fitch 4-3 with Reed McCreery scoring a hat trick with three goals and one assist, Noah Cartwright scoring one goal and one assist, and Marcus Romeo also added an assist. Goalie Rhys Jones had 10 saves.

Football passes go on sale

The Poland High School athletic office will begin to sell passes for the upcoming fall athletic season. Starting on Aug. 14 and going through Aug. 25, the following passes or tickets can be purchased at the Poland High School athletic office from 9a.m. until 3 p.m.: current football reserve season ticket holders can purchase reserve parking passes for $25 for the season, adult activity passes for $100 (good for general admission to all home athletic events) and student activity passes for $50 (good for general admission to all home athletic events). Anyone wishing to purchase new football reserve season tickets can purchase them starting on Aug. 21 in the high school athletic office. Also, starting at 9 a.m. on Aug. 21, the athletic office will be selling general admission tickets to the Friday night, Aug. 25 home opener - Poland versus Marlington. Tickets to the Marlington game can also be purchased at Trolio’s T-Shirts. For more information on football season tickets, call the athletic office at 330-757-7021.

Football season is on the horizon and Neighbors needs your help featuring the great football teams in your area that are age groups middle school and younger for our Neighbors Blitz page. If you are a coach or parent, please consider submitting a photograph or two of the players in action or of the team afterward, along with some details on the game and the names of any players or team members photographed, listed from left to right and front to back. Neighbors wants autumn sports news

Autumn athletics have arrived and Neighbors wants to be there every step of the way. If you’re a sports coach or the parent of an athlete, we need your help. In order to get teams and players the recognition they deserve, we want to showcase them in our pages.
