Members of the Canfield Gridiron Club served as grill masters as they grilled up the steaks during the club’s tenth annual Meet the Team Steak Fry fundraiser at the Canfield High School cafeteria on Aug. 12. The Canfield Gridiron Club is the booster club for the high school football teams and cheerleading squads.

Each football squad, from seventh-grade to varsity, took shifts during the dinner, including bussing, cleaning tables and doing dishes. Throughout the day, each team, along with their cheerleaders, were introduced by Nancy Dove in the high school gym to family and friends with the varsity team being introduced at a rally at the end of the fundraiser.

According to Cindy Toohey, communications chair for the Canfield Gridiron Club, the steak fry is the boosters’ largest fundraiser, with proceeds going to help to meet the needs of the seventh-grade through varsity football and cheer programs.

“This fundraiser does a lot for the program. All the proceeds raised go right back into the football and cheer programs to provide whatever the players and cheerleaders might need throughout the year. This year, we have purchased new coats and uniforms for the cheer squads, a jugs machine for the football program and have made upgrades and improvements to the game software the football coaches and players use,” Toohey said.

The menu for the steak fry included steak, potatoes, corn, salad, bread, dessert and beverage.

A Chinese auction took place during the dinner and included more than 100 baskets with donations from each football squad, cheerleaders, football families, teachers and local businesses.

Parent members of the Canfield Gridiron Club volunteered in all aspects of the fundraiser, from selling tickets to working in the kitchen and on the grills, and from prepping the day before and cleaning up. The club also offered a 50/50 raffle.

This year’s team T-shirts, dubbed the ‘word shirt,’ features the word ‘Purpose.’ Each year, the varsity team chooses one word to be featured on the shirts which will represent the football season. The shirts are $15 and will be available at the football games throughout the season.

The Gridiron Club is also selling Canfield Cardinals ornamental concrete stepping stones, cardinal heads and a standing cardinal.
