Fourteen Giant Eagle locations collected more than $47,000 at registers to give to Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley.

Representatives from Giant Eagle will present a check today to Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley from the seventh annual register campaign, which was expanded to the Mahoning Valley for the first time this year.

The 14 area Giant Eagle stores participated by asking customers at the checkout for $1 and $5 donations.

The funds will be used to benefit the Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley Center for Childhood Cancer and Blood Disorders. Overall, Giant Eagle stores’ total contribution to Akron Children’s Hospital was more than $140,000 this year.

Merger completed

CANFIELD

Farmers National Banc Corp., the holding company for The Farmers National Bank of Canfield, announced Tuesday it completed the merger of Monitor Bancorp Inc., the holding company for The Monitor Bank with and into FMNB Merger Subsidiary II LLC, a newly formed, wholly-owned subsidiary of Farmers.

“We are excited to complete this transaction, our third bank acquisition since 2015, and to bring our successful community banking model to the attractive Holmes County market,” said Kevin J. Helmick, president and CEO of Farmers, in a statement.

Farmers, headquartered in Canfield, now has more than $2 billion in banking assets, more than $1 billion in trust assets and operates 39 branches in Mahoning, Trumbull, Columbiana, Stark, Wayne, Medina, Holmes and Cuyahoga counties in Ohio and Beaver County in Pennsylvania.

Safety days

EAST LIVERPOOL

Flynn Auto Group dealership, Power Chevrolet-Buick-GMC in East Liverpool will have Operation Kidsafe Back to School Safety Day from noon to 5 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the dealership at 16070 state Route 170.

There will be free digital fingerprints and safety photos will be taken of children. There will also be a cookout.

Mazda recalls nearly 80K vehicles

DETROIT

Mazda is recalling nearly 80,000 cars and SUVs, some for a second time, to replace dangerous Takata air-bag inflators.

The recall covers front passenger inflators on certain 2007 through 2009 and 2012 CX-7, CX-9 and Mazda 6 vehicles. The recalls vary by state and age of the vehicles.

Takata inflators can explode with too much force and hurl shrapnel into drivers and passengers.
