ASHLAND

Canfield’s girls golf team took second in the Ashland George Valentine Invitational at Ashland Brookside Golf Course. Canfield’s team score was 324. Host Ashland won with a score of 318.

Hannah Keffler was the tournaments overall medalist by shooting 70. Gillian Cerimele and Carmel Cerimele shot 77 and 85, respectively. Kristin Shelley shot 92.

Mill Creek MetroParks to offer junior program

Mill Creek MetroParks will offer a new fall junior golf program for children aged six to 14 years old on select Sundays in September and October. The fall program will rotate between the Mill Creek Golf Course and Mill Creek Wick Recreation Par-3 Course. The program will run on Sunday’s from Sept. 10 to Oct 1. Juniors who do not own a set of golf clubs and wish to participate will be provided with clubs to use for the day by Mill Creek.

Registration is available by calling 330-740-7112 or in person at the Mill Creek Golf Course Fieldhouse or Wick Recreation Par-3 Course. The deadline is Sept. 7.

Kansas to honor Mangino, 2007 team

LAWRENCE, Kan.

Kansas plans to honor former coach Mark Mangino, who was forced out amid allegations that he abused his players, and the rest of the 2007 team that won the Orange Bowl, during its season opener.

The school said Tuesday that the team will be inducted into its Hall of Fame, along with former players Aqib Talib and Anthony Collins, during the opener Sept. 2 against Southeast Missouri State.

Mangino, a Newcastle, Pa. native led the long-suffering Jayhawks to a 12-1 record in 2007, a season capped by a victory over Virginia Tech in the Orange Bowl. But things soon soured and Mangino was forced out in 2009, when allegations surfaced that he physically and verbally abused his players.

One of his assistants on the 2007 team, David Beaty, is now the Jayhawks’ head coach.

U.S. seeks cities for World Cup bid

CHICAGO

The committee that is hoping to bring the 2026 World Cup to the United States, Mexico and Canada is seeking bids from 44 cities that may be interested in hosting matches.

The United Bid Committee is considering 49 stadiums in those regions for inclusion in the official bid that will be sent to soccer’s international governing body, FIFA, in March.

The committee announced Tuesday that it will review interest and select a short list of possible host cities in September. The bid ultimately sent to FIFA is expected to include up to 25 venues, but it is expected that 12 cities will be designated as official hosts.

Andretti starts new round of chemo

John Andretti has started another round of chemotherapy.

The former NASCAR and IndyCar driver used Twitter on Monday to provide an update on his fight against colon cancer: “Same cocktail with an added twist. Only 3 months to go.”

The 54-year-old Andretti made his diagnosis public in early May and has relied on social media to keep fans abreast of his condition.

In late June, he Tweeted that doctors found that his spleen and gall bladder were cancer free. Andretti continues to encourage others to get preventative screenings.

Andretti started 49 consecutive IndyCar races from 1990-92 before moving to NASCAR, where he made 29 or more starts every year from 1994-2003. He was the first driver to attempt the Memorial Day double.

Top basketball prospect picks Duke

DURHAM, N.C.

Duke has signed top high school prospect Marvin Bagley III and says he will enroll for the Fall 2017 semester.

Team spokesman Cory Walton said Bagley signed his financial aid agreement Tuesday, one day after a nationally televised ceremony during which he committed to the Blue Devils.
