ART SHOWS

Buhl Day 2017 is seeking entries for this year’s art show. It will be a juried 2D multimedia art show that will take place at the Buhl Casino on Buhl Day, Sept. 4. The show committee will be accepting entries Sept. 1 between 5 and 8 p.m. All accepted pieces will be judged Sept. 2. The winning piece will be displayed at Cravings, 76 Shenango Ave., downtown Sharon, during September.

DANCES

Boardman United Methodist Church, 6809 Market St., is offering community dance lessons at 5 p.m. Wednesdays. Each lesson is one hour, and the cost is $5 per lesson. Bob McPhail, a professional instructor, teaches a variety of dances. Line dancing starts this week. This is a fun activity to get moving, to meet new people and to learn new dances. FAIRS, FESTIVALS

William Penn Association Branch 28 will host its fraternal festival from noon to 6 p.m. Aug. 26 at the Hungarian Cultural Center of Northeastern Ohio, 12027 Abbott Road, Hiram. All you can eat and drink for admission cost of $15 for adults (groups of 12 or more, fee is $12), $5 for students with I.D. and free for children under 12. All proceeds to benefit the WPA scholarship fund. Menu choices will include goulash, stuffed cabbage, cabbage and noodles, kolbasz, hot dogs, chicken with Hungarian noodles and corn polenta. Pastries, palacsinta (crepes), langos (fried dough) and bacon bread will be available for purchase separately. There also will be a basket auction with proceeds to benefit the scholarship fund of the William Penn.

FUNDRAISERS

Austintown Alumni Association is selling raffle tickets for this year’s scholarship and mini-grant fundraiser. Announcement of winners will take place during half time at the Sept. 22 football game at Falcon Stadium. Members are selling a book of six raffle tickets for $5 or individual tickets for $1 each. Tickets may be purchased until half-time or by calling Austintown Alumni Association president, Lynn Larson at 330-518-5727.

Warren Harley Owners Group will host a 12-hour bike-a-thon for Legacy Dog Rescue at 8 a.m. Saturday at Warren Harley Davidson, 2102 Elm Road, Cortland. The cost to participate is $10 per rider and $5 per passenger. Bikes will leave every hour on the hour, in a one-hour loop with the first group departing at 8 a.m. Loops will continue rain or shine every for 12 hours. All vehicles are welcome. There will be a Bug Run at 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., and a Hippie Run at 6 p.m. Participants should be sure to wear ’60s gear and a super-hero costume for the Super Hero Run at 7 p.m. Among the features will be a food truck, refreshments, a basket raffle and many vendors. Proceeds will help Legacy Dog Rescue, a local 501(c)(3) organization that saves dogs that have been abandoned, abused or neglected and places them into loving homes. St. Nicholas School is participating in a shoe collection fundraiser until Oct. 1. Rubber band gently used shoes in pairs. The goal is to collect 2,500 pairs and boxes to donate are located at St. Nicholas and Holy Trinity Church doors.

Sight for all United will host “The Second Eye Ball of the Mahoning Valley” on Sept. 30 at Powers Auditorium. This event will help raise funds to continue to sustain Sight for All and assist the citizens in the community who are in need of vision services. American Idol finalist, Scott MacIntyre will be the special guest. Sponsorships available are Visionary, $10,000 reserves 16 seats (two tables); Crystal Clear, $5,000 reserves eight seats; 20-20 donor, $2,500 reserves eight seats; and Sight Saver, $1,000 reserves eight seats. PICNICS

Free Polish Krakusy Society will have its second annual summer picnic from 12:30 to 7:30 p.m. Sunday at Countryside Farm on state Route 224 in Poland. A variety of ethnic foods and Polish beers will be available. The picnic will offer children’s activities, face painting, music, a 50-50 raffle, a silent auction and cornhole tournament. Newton Falls Public Library, 204 S. Canal St., will sponsor a discussion of young adult literature at 6 p.m. the third Thursday of each month. This week’s discussion will be on “Holding Up the Universe” by Jennifer Niven. The library also will have a program on the solar eclipse at 2 p.m. next Monday. There will be stories, crafts and myths about this celestial event, and glasses for viewing the event, weather permitting, will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis. Salem Community Center will present the seventh Women’s Night Out on Sept. 27, from 4 to 8 p.m. Women’s Night Out centers around information, products and services for females of all ages who want to learn ways to take better care of their bodies and minds and improve upon their lifestyles. This event is a benefit for the SCC’s children’s fitness center, and will feature a vendors marketplace with nearly 60 businesses, buffet dinner, spa treatment rooms, bingo, and chair massages provided. Speakers Thomas Welsh, Joshua Foster and Gordon Morgan, co-authors of “A History of Jewish Youngstown and the Steel Valley,” will share highlights of their recently released book. Topics that will be covered are career assessment and exploration; soft skills such as resume writing and interviewing; job stability; maintaining a job; and financial literacy.
