POLICE CALLS

A summary of recent criminal activity in Girard and Hubbard:

GIRARD

Aug. 5

Recovered property: A woman found a men’s wallet while she was on Church Hill Road.

Fraud: A South Davis Street couple noticed 27 suspicious transactions had been made to the man’s credit/debit card that totaled $458.

Attempted burglary: An East Liberty Street man told police someone reached into his home through a broken window, tried to open the front door and attempted to enter before the would-be burglar was scared off and fled in a Ford vehicle.

Aug. 6

Burglary: To a residence in the 100 block of Stambaugh Street, from which 29 over-the-counter pills were missing.

Citation: After an officer reportedly saw several dogs fighting with one another near South Davis Street, police issued a minor-misdemeanor citation charging Jonathan McClure, 26, of Iowa Avenue, Girard, with allowing his dogs to run loose, in violation of a local ordinance.

Domestic violence: Joshua C. Benner, 46, of East Second Street, Girard, was charged with the crime after his son alleged Benner had sent a threatening text message stating that when he returned home, he would harm the accuser. The correspondence caused the victim to fear for his well-being, a report said.

Aug. 7

Drugs: While on routine patrol close to midnight in Liberty Township Park near U.S. Route 422, an officer charged three 16-year-old boys with drug abuse and criminal trespassing. All three teens admitted having smoked marijuana; also, a bag of suspected marijuana was found in a backpack, police said.

Aug. 8

Arrest: While responding to a fight on West Wilson Avenue, authorities took Sherry Wieder, 44, into custody. Wieder, of West Wilson, Girard, was wanted on a Liberty Township warrant accusing her of failing to appear in court.

Breaking and entering: Someone broke into a structure in the 1600 block of North State Street before taking 50 pieces of antique wood valued at about $1,700.

Theft: An East Second Street man reported $2,156 worth of property had been removed from his vehicle, including a spinning reel and rod as well as over-the-counter medication.

Possible fraud: A Beechwood Drive man said he received a notice from a collection agency stating he failed to pay a $399 cable bill.

Theft: Someone entered a car in the 60 block of Crumlin Avenue and removed six to eight over-the-counter pills and a prescription.

Criminal mischief: A vehicle in the 100 block of Crumlin Avenue was found with a broken driver’s-side window after someone also had rummaged through the car.

Arrest: Police charged Gail Miconi, 60, of Morris Avenue, Girard, with disorderly conduct and making a false alarm after she reportedly had called 911 to report the smell of natural gas. Miconi, who was intoxicated and refused to cooperate with authorities, had turned on the oven and opened its door herself, a report stated.

Harassment: A South Davis Street woman told officers a man she had friended on Facebook threatened to disseminate personal photographs of her unless she paid him $300.

Theft: A Crumlin Avenue man reported $60 and a portable DVD player missing from his vehicle.

Criminal mischief: While on routine patrol in the 100 block of Crumlin Avenue, an officer noticed a car’s driver’s-side window had been shattered.

Theft: Police received information that a man and a woman were breaking into vehicles in the 100 block of East Second Street before a woman reportedly discovered a $300 wristwatch and a bag missing from her car.

HUBBARD

Aug. 5

Summons: Police and firefighters responded to what they believed may have been a structure fire near Elizabeth and Jones streets before issuing a summons charging Dale M. Harrison Jr., 21, of Taylor Street, Hubbard, with disposing of solid waste material via open burning, a violation of a local ordinance. Harrison reportedly had a bonfire and was burning old furniture, a report showed.

Aug. 7

Arrest: Police in downtown Youngstown took custody of Nicholas D. Gibson of Eas t Avondale Avenue, Youngstown. Gibson, 27, was wanted on a warrant accusing him of failing to appear for arraignment.

Theft: A West Park Avenue man reported giving a 32-year-old woman $120 after having cashed a check in that amount and in an effort to assist her, but before his bank called and stated the check had been forged. The victim lost about $200 that included added fees.

Theft/forgery: A West Park Avenue woman alleged her daughter took, forged and cashed a $200 money order.

Aug. 8

Arrest: A traffic stop near North Main and School streets resulted in the arrest of Sheyla A. Such of Trumbull Avenue, Campbell. She was wanted on a Youngstown warrant charging failure to appear in court.

Criminal mischief: The owner of a North Main Street floral shop discovered someone had placed mashed potatoes, milk and bread or crust on her vehicle’s hood.
