Jewish film fest presents lineup

The Youngstown Area Jewish Film Festival has scheduled several films through Sept. 10.
Up next is “To Life!,” an uplifting drama-romance about the bond between an aging cabaret singer who is a Holocaust survivor and a young German man. The 2015 German film will be screened at 7 p.m. Aug. 20 at Encore Cinema in Niles.
All films are $10 at the door ($7 in advance at jccyoungstown.org/yajff or by calling 330-746-3250, ext. 195; and $5 for students).
The rest of the schedule is as follows:
“The Pickle Recipe” (U.S.A., 2016), at 7 p.m. Aug. 23 at Encore Cinema: A family comedy about a cash-strapped party emcee and his conniving uncle, who scheme to steal a secret family recipe.
“Rosenwald” (U.S.A., 2015), at 4 p.m. Aug. 27 at Movies 8, Boardman: A documentary about little-known philanthropist Julius Rosenwald, who overcame humble origins to become the top executive at Sears and Roebuck, and helped build more than 5,000 schools to help impoverished people in the South.
“Rock in the Red Zone” (U.S.A./Israel, 2014), at 7 p.m. Aug. 31 at Encore Cinema: A documentary about the war-weary city of Sderot, which has managed to become an epicenter of music.
“Once in a Lifetime” (France, 2014), at 7 p.m. Sept. 7 at Movies 8, Boardman: A teacher at a French high school taps lessons of the Holocaust in an effort to motivate her troubled students.
“In Search of Israeli Cuisine” (U.S.A., 2013), at 7 p.m. Sept. 10 at DeYor Performing Arts Center, Youngstown: A celebrity chef travels across Israel and paints a portrait of the Israeli people through the language of food. An Israeli dinner by Jeff Chrystal Catering will precede the film at 5 p.m. Tickets are $27 (includes film).
