Alumni association sells raffle tickets
The Austintown Alumni Association is selling raffle tickets for this year’s scholarship and mini grant fundraiser. Members are selling a book of six raffle tickets for $5 or individual tickets for $1 each. The first prize is $500 cash, second prize contains gift certificates to local businesses worth at least $200 and third prize is a dinner for two at Rachel’s Restaurant and a dinner for two at The Manor, valued at $50 each. Proceeds from this project support the association’s scholarship fund, which awarded $6,000 to Fitch seniors who graduated in June, and $1,000 in mini grants to teachers who applied for these grants. The winners of this year’s raffle will be announced during half time at the football game at Falcon Stadium on Sept. 22. Tickets can be purchased until half time or by contacting Austintown Alumni Association president Lynn Larson at 330-518-5727.
Volunteers sought for heritage day
In preparation for its ninth annual Polish Heritage Day on Aug. 27 from 11 a.m. until 8 p.m. at St. Anne’s Church on 4310 Kirk Road in Youngstown (at the corner of Kirk and Raccoon Roads), organizers are inviting the public to help make the event happen. Volunteers of every age, skill and ability are welcome. Help is needed for everything from set up and take down to ticket sales, helping with the pierogi-eating contest and assisting in cultural display and children’s areas. Various shifts are available. Every volunteer gets free admission and a t-shirt (while supplies last). Youngstown’s SCORE is presenting “Where’s the Money? What lenders look for in your business plan” at Youngstown SCORE’s upcoming business networking series, Bagels to Business, on Aug. 21 at Kravitz Deli, located at 3135 Belmont in Liberty, from 9-10:30 a.m. Featured speakers are banker Brett Carnahan, Seven Seventeen Credit Union; banker Jeanette Cocher, Farmers National Bank; Mario Nero, Mahoning Valley Economic Development Corporation, and Tom Sangrik, U.S. Small Business Administration. Boardman Park to host Ace Race disc golf tournament
Whether you are new to disc golf or you are a pro, don’t miss Ace Race 2017, taking place on Sept. 9 at 8:30 a.m. at Boardman Park. Each year, disc golfers from around the globe gather at their local disc golf courses for one purpose: to throw aces (a hole in one). Tees are moved up so holes are generally between 100 and 150 feet, making every hole “aceable” and allowing players of all abilities to participate. The entry fee is $40 and includes lunch, two Ace Race discs, that you must use that day, and other disc golf gear. The grand prize will be a disc golf bag along with discs to fill it. Additional prizes will be awarded for the longest drive, closest to the pin, a putting competition and a 50/50 raffle. Register online at boardmandiscgolf.weebly.com or in the Boardman Park office. Movies at the library
Bring your own snacks and drinks to enjoy during the movie on Aug. 29 at 6 p.m. at the Austintown library. The movie will be a newly released DVD rated PG or G. This event is for the family. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
Strategy board games at the library
If you like to play strategy board games, go to the Austintown library on Aug. 12 at 3 p.m. to play games like “Ticket to Ride,” “Settlers of Catan” and “Carcassonne.” Play what’s there or bring your own to share. Light refreshments will be served. This event is for adults and teens.
Paper crafting corner
Join the Austintown library every month to learn how to create a different paper craft. The August event will take place on Aug. 25 at 11 a.m. You must register. This event is for adults.
YWTF and others speak on Title IX
The Young Women’s Task Force and American Association of Women of Youngstown recently sponsored a “Celebration the 45th Anniversary of Title IX” at the YWCA in Youngstown. Dr.Cryshanna Jackson Leftwich, Director of Women and Gender Studies and an Associate Professor in the Department of Politics and International Relations at Youngstown State University, presented her perspective of how Title IX was working in the classroom and on campuses. She felt there could be more done to enforce Title IX. Title IX is the federal civil rights law that prohibits sex discrimination in education. The National Women’s Law Center works to eliminate and prevent barriers to students’ success in school. The Younger Women’s Task Force (YWTF) is a new group formed in the Mahoning Valley by and for younger women to fight for gender equity and social justice. It is a branch affiliated with American Association of University Women. Both groups promote fair and equal access to education, health care and voter registration; fight for fair pay and reproductive rights; and educate and advocate for an end to human trafficking and violence against women and men. Mercy Health mobile mammogram van offers screenings
The Mercy Health – Youngstown Mobile Mammogram van will offer mammograms at several locations around the Mahoning Valley during the month of August. Early detection of breast cancer is one of the keys to treatment and long-term survival. All women 40 and older should have an annual screening mammogram. The Mammography Van is a mobile mammography unit with private changing rooms and female technologists who perform the safe, painless low-dose X-ray with state-of-the-art equipment. The van will provide mammograms on Aug. 15 from 8:30 a.m. until noon at Stutz Primary Care, located at 3685 Stutz Dr. in Canfield and from 1-2:30 p.m. at Mineral Ridge Primary Care, located at 1360 N. Blood drive

This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize at the Austintown library every Tuesday in August at 10 a.m.
Gotta Move story time
This event is for children ages 2-5 who are accompanied by a care-giver. Join the Austintown library every Thursday in August at 10 a.m. for a variety of musical and movement activities that appeal to the “young and restless,” stimulate brain development and motivate language learning. Adults and children, get ready to act out stories and rhymes, sing and dance, talk and play.
Ten thousand pages of YA
This month, you can combine forces in an attempt to read 10,000 pages of YA books. Tell a librarian at the center desk at the Austintown library that you’d like to add pages to the total. If you participate, you may be eligible for a September pizza party if they meet their goal. Make sure you fill out a contact form. This event is for teens in grades 7-12.
Build and go craft
Make a craft at the Austintown library during regular hours in June through August to take home. This event is for children of all ages.
Austintown Park to have summer concerts
The 2017 Summer Concerts in the Park series, presented by Hollywood Gaming Mahoning Valley Race Course, at Austintown Park will soon begin. Concerts will take place on Tuesday evenings, from 7-8:30 p.m., weather permitting. Concerts will include the Jim Frank Combo on Aug. 15 and Sound Bite on Aug. 22. Austintown Park is located at 6000 Kirk Road in Austintown.

GA to meet twice this week
Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting is offered every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another is offered every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (in Cornersburg). Both meetings begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and last about 1-1/2 hours. Those who believe gambling has affected any part of their lives are urged to attend.
