Suspect kills self, ending manhunt
ANTWERP, OHIO
Authorities say a rape suspect who overpowered an Ohio deputy sheriff to escape a transport van has killed himself during a police standoff, ending a manhunt.
Paulding County authorities say 32-year-old Branden Lee Powell shot himself Monday night at his parents’ home near Antwerp, 70 miles southwest of Toledo. Authorities say Powell was in a crawl space and shot himself as officers were trying to persuade him to surrender.
Investigators say Powell stole a gun from a deputy he overpowered ON a Friday trip from a psychiatric hospital to jail.
Heavyweight champ of dinosaurs named
WASHINGTON
A study proclaims a newly named species the heavyweight champion of all dinosaurs. The plant-eating giant is the largest of a group of dinosaurs called titanosaurs. At 76 tons, the behemoth was as heavy as a space shuttle.
A scientific paper released Tuesday describes and dates the fossils found in southern Argentina in 2012. A skeleton of the dinosaur is already on display at the American Museum of Natural History in New York.
The researchers examined fossils of six creatures of the new species and dated them back about 100 million years. The giants measured about 122 feet long with shoulders 20 feet high, dwarfing Tyrannosaurus rex.
Researchers named it Patagotitan mayorum, combining Patagonia and titan, along with a host family’s name.

For the first time, U.S. lottery players will have a choice of games offering jackpots topping $300 million.

The jackpot for Tuesday night’s Mega Millions drawing was an estimated $350 million, and the top prize for tonight’s Powerball drawing is $307 million. Those prizes are based on annuity options, paid over 29 years. Cash prizes would be an estimated $218.3 million for Mega Millions and $193.2 million for Powerball.
No explosives found
BRUSSELS
Belgian prosecutors said no explosives were found in a car stopped by police gunfire after a high-speed chase in the flash-point Brussels suburb of Molenbeek.
Police chased the car after the driver ran a red light and the vehicle was involved in two collisions before it was finally brought to a halt, Ine Van Wymersch, spokeswoman for the Brussels prosecutor’s office, said. She declined to identify the suspect, but said he was a Rwandan national born in 1981 who was not previously known to police.
Strong quake hits China, killing 9
beijing
A strong earthquake shook a mountainous region in southwestern China near a famous national park Tuesday, killing nine people, injuring 164 others and knocking out power and phone networks.
At least five of the dead were tourists, China’s official Xinhua News Agency said. The information office of the Sichuan province government also said 21 people were seriously injured. The magnitude-6.5 quake struck a region bordered by the provinces of Sichuan and Gansu.
About seven hours after the earthquake, another strong quake struck in far northwestern China, some 1,360 miles away. That earthquake, which hit early today, measured at magnitude 6.3 by the USGS and 6.6 by China’s agency, was centered in a sparsely populated area of the Xinjiang region. There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage.
