Wanted: High-school math teachers for Youngstown schools
Staff report
YOUNGSTOWN
Youngstown City Schools needs more high-school math teachers and is willing to negotiate salaries to get them, school officials said.
The end of the school year, just this past May, left the city school district without a math department after nine math teachers quit.
CEO Krish Mohip said the district is being aggressive in its recruitment efforts but still has six spots to fill.
“It’s important to have high-quality teachers,” Mohip said.
This hole in the math department, however, isn’t a new problem to the city schools.
“There was a cohort of students in the district, prior to my arrival, who went four full years with missing math teachers,” Mohip said.
“So the fact that some of the math scores are so low isn’t a surprise.”
Mohip added that he’s willing to pay teachers a competitive, and negotiable, wage – an average wage is between $50,000 and $60,000.
If teachers are not found before school starts Sept. 5, Mohip said he will have to move people around to ensure students are getting the education they deserve.
“The fact is a school system exists to teach children,” he said.
