Spikes limit Scrappers to 6 hits

Evan Mendoza hit a run-scoring single in the third inning, leading the State College Spikes to a 3-2 win over the Mahoning Valley Scrappers on Monday.

Bryce Denton scored on the play to give the Spikes a 1-0 lead after he tripled.

Trailing 3-1, the Scrappers cut into the deficit in the eighth inning when Jonathan Laureano hit an RBI single, bringing home Jesse Berardi.

Berardi had the Scrappers’ other run batted in.

Mahoning Valley missed an additional scoring opportunity in the eighth, when Clark Scolamiero struck out with the bases loaded to end the inning.

State College left-hander Andrew Summerville (3-0) picked up the win after allowing one run on three hits over five innings.

Opposing starter Elijah Morgan (2-1) took the loss in the New York-Penn League game after giving up one run and three hits over three innings.

Spencer Trayner pitched one-and-two-thirds scoreless innings for his fifth save.

For the Scrappers, Ulysses Cantu reached base four times. The Scrappers were limited to six hits, with Cantu and Ernie Clement each getting two.

The Scrappers (27-19) will be in Aberdeen, Md., tonight to play the Ironbirds in the first of a three-game series.

State College is 26-21.
