Tigers 5, Orioles 2

BALTIMORE

Justin Upton hit a grand slam in the eighth inning to back a strong pitching performance by Justin Verlander, and Detroit beat Baltimore. Jim Adduci also homered for the Tigers, who have won six of seven. Verlander (7-7) struck out 10 and gave up two runs and six hits over seven innings. Two singles and a walk loaded the bases for Upton, who sent the first pitch deep into the left-field seats. It was his third slam of the season and seventh of his career.

Red Sox 3, White Sox 2

BOSTON

Mitch Moreland homered with two outs in the 11th inning, lifting Boston to a victory over Chicago. Moreland, a defensive replacement in the 10th, drove a pitch from Aaron Bummer (0-2) over the Green Monster for his 14th of the season. It was Boston’s second game-ending homer this week.

Twins 8, Rangers 4

MINNEAPOLIS

Bartolo Colon threw his first complete game in two years to earn his first win with Minnesota, Brian Dozier homered twice and the Twins beat Texas. Robbie Grossman homered and had three RBIs for the Twins. In his fourth start for Minnesota, the 44-year-old Colon (3-9) scattered nine hits and allowed four earned runs for his 37th career complete game.

Astros 16, Blue Jays 7

HOUSTON

Alex Bregman hit a two-run homer and Marwin Gonzalez added a three-run shot as part of a nine-run fourth inning, and Houston beat Toronto. Tyler White had four hits, including a two-run homer in the sixth and a solo drive in the eighth, and finished a triple shy of the cycle. Every Astro hitter had at least one hit. Yuli Gurriel had a two-run homer in the first, an RBI single in the third and also finished a triple shy of the cycle.

Mariners 5, Royals 2

KANSAS CITY

James Paxton tied a Mariners’ record by winning his seventh straight start, and Seattle beat Kansas City. Paxton gave up two runs and four hits in six innings with one walk, seven strikeouts and a pair of wild pitches. David Phelps, Nick Vincent and Edwin Diaz each followed with a perfect inning as Seattle improved to 13-8 since the All-Star break. Diaz got his 22nd save in 26 chances.

NATIONAL LEAGUE

Reds 3, Cardinals 2

CINCINNATI

Joey Votto drove home a pair of runs with a double and a single, and Asher Wojciechowski went five innings in his return to the rotation on Friday night, leading Cincinnati over St. Louis. Votto had a pair of RBI hits off Mike Leake (7-10). Billy Hamilton added a run-scoring single off Leake, who allowed eight hits in six innings.

Nationals 4, Cubs 2

CHICAGO

Daniel Murphy hit two home runs to back Tanner Roark, and Washington beat Chicago. Murphy hit a two-run homer in the first and connected off Kyle Hendricks leading off the sixth for a 3-0 lead. Roark (9-7) didn’t allow a run until Javier Baez chased him with a two-run homer with one out in the seventh.

Braves 5, Marlins 3

ATLANTA

R.A. Dickey won for the first time in seven starts, Nick Markakis hit a three-run homer and Atlanta overcame Giancarlo Stanton’s two home runs to beat Miami. Dickey (7-7) allowed three hits, three runs, one walk and struck out three in six innings.

Dodgers 6, Mets 0

NEW YORK

Yu Darvish fit right in with the steamrolling Dodgers, striking out 10 over seven innings of three-hit ball during his debut to pitch the Dodgers past New York. Chris Taylor hit a leadoff homer against Jacob deGrom, and Mets nemesis Chase Utley added a two-run shot. Yasiel Puig also went deep for the Dodgers.

INTERLEAGUE

Brewers 2, Rays 0

ST. PETERSBURG

Brandon Woodruff allowed seven hits in 61/3 innings of his major league debut and Orlando Arcia homered and scored both runs in Milwaukee’s victory. Arcia’s three hits included a triple off Rays starter Jake Faria in the third and his 10th home run of the season in the eighth.
