Guests at the Austintown library got creative making their own pop art after a visit from artist Michael Albert on June 27.
Albert, a New York POP Artist, has been creating art since he was a student at New York University, where he studied business. He is well-known for his Cerealism art, which is a piece of work created out of a collage of cereal boxes.
“Ever since my book came out in 2008, I’ve developed this program that I call the Modern Pop Art Experience,” said Albert.
The program began with Albert talking about his personal life and how he became an artist. He showed posters of his artwork to give the guests different ideas of how they can create their own pop art.
After talking about his posters, the guests had the opportunity to create their own collages out of consumer brand boxes that were provided. Each person got a black square that they could cover by gluing together different pieces of the boxes.
When everyone finished their creations, they could pick out one of the posters that Albert showed them and take one home with them. Albert also offered to autograph the posters if they person wished.
Albert visited the Boardman, Canfield and Poland libraries to give Mahoning Valley community members the opportunity to create pop art. There were some people who came to more than one program.
“I discovered that I love art and I think the way that I really discovered that was by visiting museums,” said Albert.
As a thank you to The Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County, Albert created a pop art Youngstown poster and gave it to the PLYMC to hang up wherever they wanted.
Albert will be visiting the Butler Institute of Art on July 30 for another program that families can attend.
