DeWine announces $2.7 million in grant funding for drug education
COLUMBUS — Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine today announced the award of $2.7 million in grant funding to 130 law enforcement agencies for drug education programs. Some of those funds will go to law enforcement agencies in the Mahoning Valley.
• The Austintown Police Department will receive $15,994.63.
• The Beaver Police Department will receive $13,816.40.
• The Canfield Police Department will receive $1,856.88.
• The Columbiana Police Department will receive $7,759.80.
• The East Palestine Police Department will receive $1,766.94.
• The Goshen Police District will receive $6,918.40.
• The Goshen Township Police Department will receive $10,006.50.
• The Liberty Township Police Department will receive $1,925.
• The Lisbon Police Department will receive $4,200.60.
• The Mahoning County Sheriff’s Office will receive $17,722.50.
• The Newton Falls Police Department will receive $12,756.96.
• The Vienna Township Police Department will receive $6,750.
The funds must be used to establish or maintain drug-abuse prevention education and awareness programs for students during the 2017-18 school years.
Grant recipients are required to teach students about over-the-counter and prescription drugs.
“The abuse of prescription drugs is one of the primary reasons behind the current opiate epidemic in Ohio, which is why it’s important that students receive age-appropriate lessons about the dangers of these drugs and other drugs at an early age,” DeWine said in a statement.
