Upgrades for lake

COLUMBUS

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources announced improvements coming to Mosquito Lake State Park.

Using money appropriated for capital improvements at Ohio State Parks, the park will add 20 full-service hookups – including water, sewer and electric – in the campground, a new shower house with restrooms in the campground and a new restroom at the marina.

Last spring, the park added a new beach pavilion.

Ohioans are asked to offer suggestions for future park improvements at parks.ohiodnr.gov/improvements.

Assault charge

YOUNGSTOWN

A Randolph Street man is in the Mahoning County jail on a charge of felonious assault after reports said he beat a man with a sink that was lying in his yard.

Police were called about 10:30 p.m. Thursday to the 300 block of Randolph, and found a man in the West Side street with a swollen head who told officers he had an argument with Ronald Paris Jr., 23.

The victim told police Paris was upset the victim came home late because they both are on parole. Paris chased the victim into his yard and picked up a metal sink and began beating him with it.

The victim was examined by paramedics and taken to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital. Paris was taken to jail.

Drug charge

A township woman faces a drug-possession charge after police said they found she had prescription pills in other people’s names.

Charged is Tabitha Fitzpatrick, 30, of Melrose Avenue.

Fitzpatrick was a passenger in a vehicle a police officer stopped Thursday on Market Street, according to a police report.

Police said they found two prescriptions for Hydrocodone, an opioid pain medication, in her purse. One contained 58 pills, the other contained 24. Neither were in Fitzpatrick’s name, according to police.

Road closure

Oakwood Avenue between North Meridian Road and Lexington Place will be closed to traffic from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. today for waterline-replacement work.

Park roads closed

These roads in Mill Creek Park will be closed from approximately 7 to 11 a.m. Sunday for the Casal’s 5K Run/Walk: New Cross, Bears Den, Cross and West drives.

Ryan introduces bill

YOUNGSTOWN

U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan introduced legislation that he says breaks down barriers to treatment for heroin and opioid addiction treatment and increases the number of beds available for substance-abuse patients.

Under current law, the Institutions for Mental Diseases exclusion prohibits Medicaid matching payments for services provided in treatment facilities that have more than 16 beds. The Breaking Addiction Act removes this policy, allowing states to better use Medicaid to serve more people. Ryan of Howland, D-13th, is among four lead sponsors of the legislation.

Writing awards

YOUNGSTOWN

An awards ceremony for the 2017 Dom Leone Writing Competition will take place at 7:30 p.m. Monday on the Youngstown State University campus.

A total of 526 entries were submitted in this year’s competition, which was divided into three categories: cartoons, short fiction and poetry and song lyrics.
