Book a librarian during the month of May

If you would like a personal introduction to resources available at the library or need more time with a librarian than you can get over the phone or if you just walk in, make an appointment to book a library during the month of May. Book-a-Librarian sessions are tailored to meet the specific needs of the individual. A library staff member will give undivided attention to customers who want in-depth help with a variety of library services, including learning to use a computer, email or the internet; downloading e-books and audiobooks; researching a topic; discovering new books and authors to read and enjoy and business, non-profit or genealogy help. Local libraries to have May closings

All libraries in the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County system will be closed on May 14, 28 and 29 (Memorial Day).

Loghurst Museum to host Trunk and Treasure sale

There will be a Trunk and Treasure sale for the Canfield Heritage Foundation (Loghurst) every first and third Saturday of each month during summer, starting on May 6 (on days that the museum is open) from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. with set-up from 8-9 a.m. The cost is $10 per vehicle. Vendors are able to sell from their pick-ups, trunks of their cars or whatever vehicle they have. They may use a tent/table, etc. in their space. Color your world

Join the Poland library on May 3 from 7-8:30 p.m. for a relaxing evening of adult coloring. Coloring sheets and materials will be provided, or you’re welcome to bring your own. This event is for teens and adults.

Rummage sale to be May 4-6

There will be a rummage sale at the Woodworth Church of the Brethren, located at 30 E. Western Reserve Road, on May 4 and 5 from 8:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. and on May 6 from 8:30 a.m. until noon. Saturday is bag day. Lunch and baked goods will also be available for purchase.

Murder in the Library: Hulas and Homicide

Hula legend Winnie Waheli is found dead on Kikiwai Beach early on the morning of the annual hula contest. Winnie has made quite a few enemies through the years and one of them has done her in. Who would dare end the career of the maven of movement? Could someone have plotted the death of the darling of divatude? Or, was this just the result of a temper tantrum by a close associate? You must solve the murder before the killer strikes again. Listen carefully to the suspects, study the crime scene and watch for any unusual circumstances. Only the sleuth with the most correct answers will win the prize. Light refreshments will be served. This event is for adults only and will take place on May 11 at 6 p.m. at the Poland library. Painting party for adults

Paint your own canvas for your home or for that special gift at the Poland library on May 9 at 6 p.m. No experience is necessary. All supplies and instruction are provided. There is a $5 fee, cash or check only, payable at the door. Registration is required as space is limited.

Home buying and selling/home inspection

Come to the Poland library on May 4 at 6 p.m. to learn from an experienced realtor, Paul Bevilacqua of Northwood Realty Services. Bevilacqua will help explain the process of buying and selling a home. He will also explain factors such as finding a home, viewing homes, home values, making/receiving offers, negotiating, home inspections, other contingencies and the closing process. All home buyers should know about the five major components to any home. Appy hour on May 8

Have you ever hased yourself ‘what’s an app?’ Do you wonder what apps are right for you? Learn all about popular apps for smartphones and mobile devices at the Poland library on May 8 at 6 p.m. See a variety of apps that will help you connect to your library, find a good place to eat, keep you entertained in a long grocery line, find a great new recipe or find great music to listen to on your walk. Registration is recommended, and can be made by calling 330-744-8636 and asking for Poland.

Medicare informational program

Are you or someone you know turning 65 in 2017,and have questions about Medicare? Join the Poland library on May 13 at 10 a.m. for this informational meeting at which Medicare enrollment, original Medicare versus Medicare Advantage, open enrollment and the prescription “doughnut hole” will be explained. The program is hosted by an Ohio Senior Health Insurance Information Program (OSHIIP) volunteer. Informational materials to take home are included. Blood drive at the library

There will be a blood drive at the Poland library on May 16 from 12:30-6:30 p.m. and May 26 from 10:30 a.m. until 3 p.m. by the Mahoning Chapter of the American Red Cross to serving the needs of St. Elizabeth Hospital. For appointments, call 1-800-RED-CROSS (1-800-733-2767).

Local Friends to have May meeting

There will be a Friends of the Poland Library meeting and program on May 2 at 10 a.m. at the Poland library. This will be a spring Llncheon for members and their guests. The meeting will follow the program. This event is for adults.

Yoga class

The Friends of PLYMC is sponsoring a Yoga Class every Wednesday in May from 5-6 p.m. at the Poland library. Pay as you attend at $10 a session. For more information, call 330-740-6086. This event is for adults.

Local author event during Celebrate Poland

Local authors can register now for a table at the local author event at the Poland library in conjunction with Celebrate Poland on July 1 from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. Call the Development Office at 330-740-6086 for a table to sell and sign books.

Blood pressure screening at the library

There will be a blood pressure screening by the Salem Area Visiting Nurse Association at the Poland library on May 3 from 2-3 p.m.

Summer Discovery to be May 1 until July 31

Visit a Mahoning County public library or sign up online on or after May 1 to register for this year’s Summer Discovery Program. This year’s theme is “Build a Better World.” All who register will receive free coupons, just for signing up. Children can complete activities or read books to earn prizes (while supplies last) and to earn a chance to win a gift card. Children who complete the program will also be invited to a breakfast in July, sponsored by Home Savings and Loan and Sweeney Chevy Buick GMC, featuring Rosemary Wells, best-selling author of the Max and Ruby books. Teens and adults can read books to earn prizes (while supplies last), too, and earn a chance to win a gift card. Applications for Italian festival scholarship available

This year’s applications for a Youngstown State University Scholarship from The Greater Youngstown Italian Fest may be retrieved from the festival’s website http://www.youngstownitalianfest.org/ or by contacting Deborah Mottle at mottlesmurals@gmail.com. Applicants must attend Youngstown State University and be of Italian descent in order to be eligible. The deadline for applicants is June 15, 2017.

Mill Creek Chapter to meet on May 9

The Mill Creek Chapter of the American Business Women’s Association will host its May 9 meeting at A La Cart in Canfield. The dinner will begin at 6:30 p.m. and there will be no speaker, only a business meeting will follow. The menu is creamed chicken over biscuit, roast pork, mashed potatoes, California blend of vegetables, tossed salad, applesauce, Jello and apple cake for dessert. Local 4-H’ers prepare for upcoming events

4-H’ers Unlimited Club recently had its election for officers including the following: President - Lindsey Knauf, Vice President - Alexis Pomponio, Secretary - Sammie Johnson, Treasurer/Assistant Secretary - Kaleigh Williams, Health Leader - Justine Knauf, Safety Officer - Kieran Pellin and Recreation Officer - Madison Gatto. Club members collected donations for a small animal-themed basket that will be donated to the 4-H Endowment Dinner on April 29 at 5 p.m. at the St. Michael’s Family Life Center in Canfield. Italian man and woman to be honored at festival, applications accepted

The Greater Youngstown Italian Fest 2017 is seeking nominations from family members or friends regarding their favorite Italian man or Italian woman. The nominees would be considered for the highest honor and if selected would be introduced in person at the festival ceremony on Aug. 4 at 5 p.m. in downtown Youngstown. Applications are available to be retrieved from the festival website at http://www.youngstownitalianfest.org/italian-man-woman-year/ or submit an essay with details regarding your nominee. What do you spy? Find the Star Wars characters hidden in the Poland library during regular hours in the month of May, unravel the secret message and be entered in a drawing for a prize. One tween and one teen will win. This event is for tweens in grades 4-6 and teens grades 7-12.

Almost summer painting party for grades 5-12

Create your very own painting as you follow along step-by-step with our presenter on May 15 at 6 p.m. at the Poland library. Snacks will be provided. Space is limited and registration is required. Call 330-744-8636 and ask for the Poland library to register. This event is for those in grades 5-12.

Listen and Lego

Listen to a story and then have fun building with Legos on May 4 at 1 p.m. at the Poland library. Legos will be provided. This event is for children, ages 4-7.

Lego my library

Meet at the Poland library on May 23 from 6-7 p.m. and enjoy creating Lego designs. Legos will be provided. This event is for children, ages 6 and up.

Read to Roxie

Relax and read to Roxie on May 24 at 6 p.m. at the Poland library. Roxie is a registered therapy dog with Therapy Dogs International. Each child will be given a 15-minute reading session while spots remain. Call 330-744-8636 and ask for the Poland library to register. This event is for grades 1-4.

Celebrate the “Beauty and the Beast” movie

Children of all ages will enjoy a magical experience of activities, games and crafts inspired by the beloved classic and newly live-action film, “Beauty and the Beast” on May 20 at 11:30 a.m. at the Poland library. This event is for children of all ages.

Trim a tree for May

Decorate an ornament for the Poland library’s all-seasons tree during regular hours in May. This event is for children of all ages.

Poland Friends to meet on May 2

The Friends of the Poland Library will meet on May 2 at the Poland library. It will be 44 years in May that the Poland Friends have met. There will not be a coffee hour. Instead there will be a pot luck luncheon. Members are asked to bring a dish of their choice with a serving spoon. Donations of books, magazines CDs and DVDs are accepted at each meeting for the Poland Friends Book Cart. New members are welcome.

Snacks will be provided. This event is for children of all ages.

Fun time for 4s and 5s

Join the Poland library on May 16 at 10:30 a.m. for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, and finger plays and other activities that will help your child become a successful reader. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Tales and talk for 2s and 3s

Join the Poland library every Thursday in May at 10:30 a.m. for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader.

Bonding with babies and books

This program is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6- to 23-months. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize on May 3, 10, 17 and 24 at 10 a.m. at the Poland library.

ASL Baby Brilliant: bonding with babies and books and signs

Learn how to use American Sign Language (ASL) with your child through rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize, on May 31 at 10 a.m. at the Poland library. Learn easy corresponding signs to learn and share with your little ones.

Playtime at your library

Prepare for Kindergarten through play at the Poland library on May 2 at 6 p.m. Read a story and have fun with developmentally appropriate games and activities that you can do with your child to help them get ready for Kindergarten. This event is for children ages 2-6. All children under 7 must be accompanied by an adult to this one-hour program.

Ladies in little black dresses for literacy

Ladies: wear your little black dress and join the library for a special fundraising event at The Lake Club, located at 1140 Paulin Road in Poland, on May 11 at 6 p.m. The event benefits the library’s Literary Society Fund and the Library Foundation’s Martha Muransky Children’s Literacy Fund. Overeaters Anonymous to have local meetings

Overeaters Anonymous is offering meetings at several local locations and on a variety of days. On Saturdays at 10 a.m., there will be a meeting at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in the Church Hall, Room 2, located at 4453 Warren-Sharon Road in Vienna, Ohio. This location is handicapped accessible. On Sundays at 7 p.m., there will be a meeting at Shenango Presbyterian Church, located at 3144 Wilmington Road (Route 18) in New Castle, Pa. This location is handicapped accessible. On Mondays, a meeting will take place at 1 p.m. at the Girard Multigenerational Center, located at 443 Trumbull Avenue in Girard. This location is handicapped accessible. On Wednesdays, a meeting will take place at 7:30 p.m. at Valley Care - Northside Medical Center in the Medical Education Building, auditorium A, located at 500 Gypsy Lane in Youngstown. GA to meet twice this week

Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting is offered every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another is offered every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (in Cornersburg). Both meetings begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and last about 1-1/2 hours. Those who believe gambling has affected any part of their lives are urged to attend. Victorian Players sponsors trip to Playhouse Square

The Victorian Players Theatre, Inc. is sponsoring a bus trip to Playhouse Square in Cleveland on May 13. They will see a matinee performance of “Something Rotten.” The bus will depart the theatre, located at 702 Mahoning Ave. in Youngstown, at 11 a.m. A boxed lunch will be provided. Cardinal Mooney High School announces 14th annual “Celebrate Mooney” auction

Cardinal Mooney High School has set the date for its 14th annual fundraising Auction as April 29. The largest fundraising event of the year will take place at the school, located at 2545 Erie St, in Youngstown, from 5:30-11 p.m. Cocktails and a silent auction will begin at 5 p.m. with dinner at 7 p.m. Tickets are available by calling the school at 330-788-5007 or online through the Auction link on www.cardinalmooney.com Individual tickets are $75, which include dinner and open bar. RSVP by April 15. This year’s theme is “Celebrate Mooney: Embracing Our Past, Highlighting Our Present, and Building a Bright Future.” As part of the celebration, Mooney will be honoring Diane Mastro Nard, Honorary Chairwoman and former CMHS teacher and Speech Coach. Marvel movie madness

Help the Poland library celebrate the release of “Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2” on April 29 at 11 a.m. You’ll watch clips and trailers, have snacks, crafts and trivia. This event is for teens age 13 and up.

Pink Ribbon Golf Classic to be July 17

The annual Pink Ribbon Golf Classic will take place at Avalon Lakes Golf and Country Club on July 17. All proceeds from this event will go directly to the American Cancer Society. Lions host Treasures of the Trunk Sale

The Poland Lions will host a “Treasures of the Trunk Sale” to benefit the Poland Lions Scholarship and Community Funds on June 10 from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. in the Poland High School stadium parking lot. The Lions are currently looking for venders for the one-day sale, including crafters, home goods, furniture, toys, specialty items and venders with garage sale items. There is a limit of 100 spaces, so reserve your space early. Registration is $10 per one parking space prior to May 1. After May 1, the cost is $15 per space. Venders must bring their own tables.
