Fifth- and sixth-grade students from local Catholic and public schools had the opportunity to explore Cardinal Mooney High School on March 31.

Cardinal Mooney High School students had the day off school, but several of them volunteered their time off to help out with the fifth- and sixth-grade students. The fifth- and sixth-grade students took four classes throughout their time there to discover what Mooney has to offer.

“I’ve had a lot of fun,” said tenth-grade Mooney student Alexis Santor. “It really opens up their minds to their options when they’re older to different kinds of friend groups and what they want to get into.”

The four-hour event gave the Mooney students an opportunity to show the younger students what Mooney is like. It also gave students from different schools an opportunity to meet each other and make new friends.

All of the students took a science class, a drama class and an art class. Students had the opportunity to choose from a variety of classes like athletics, computers, foreign language and more to take as an elective. At the end of the day all of the students participated in an exciting Mooney Olympics Competition where the winning schools were awarded with a plaque. Many students, elementary and high school, agreed the Olympics was the best part of the day.

“I thought they had a lot of good things to do to help us learn,” said St. Charles fifth-grader Katie Frommelt. “They showed us how to do things by yourself so you’re prepared.”

Frommelt said she enjoyed the Olympics the most because she likes to do active things. She is looking forward to coming to Mooney when she gets to high school.

“It’s a nice community-building day to get the little ones excited about not only coming to Mooney, but coming to the high school and interacting with our kids,” said Rebecca Bayley, Director of Admission and Marketing.

Bayley said she hopes the younger students see that as their education progresses that there is an academic element, there is a fun element and there’s a place for everyone at Cardinal Mooney.
