MCCTC Students Open Green House for Spring Plant Sale
The Spring Plant Sale, sponsored by the Floral Design and Landscaping programs at the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center, has started selling their plants. Students have prepared items including assorted annuals, hanging baskets and patio planters. Flats of flowers are also available. The Green House, located at 7300 N Palmyra Road in Canfield, will be open to the public from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m., Monday through Friday, until May 19. Local libraries to have May closings
All libraries in the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County system will be closed on May 14, 28 and 29 (Memorial Day).
Craft show and bake sale to be May 12 and 13
There will be a craft show and bake sale at Lord of Life Church, located at 550 N. Broad Street in Canfield, on May 12 from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. and on May 13 from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. Items include hand-made crafts, jewelry, vintage clothing, candles, candy, American Girl doll clothing, vintage prints, wood paintings, teamology item, hand-made baby clothing, shirts, ceramics, art works by Renee and more. Lions to host fish fry dinner
The Canfield Lions next fish dinner will take place on May 5. Dinner is served from 4:30-7:30 p.m. at A La Cart Catering, located at 429 Lisbon St. in Canfield. Dinners are haddock (baked or fried), macaroni and cheese or haluski or pierogis. You will have your choice of one side from french fries, macaroni and cheese, pierogies or haluski. This includes cole slaw or green beans, a roll, drink and dessert. The cost is $11 and take out is available.
Loghurst Museum to host Trunk and Treasure sale
There will be a Trunk and Treasure sale for the Canfield Heritage Foundation (Loghurst) every first and third Saturday of each month during summer, starting on May 6 (on days that the museum is open) from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. with set-up from 8-9 a.m. The cost is $10 per vehicle. Vendors are able to sell from their pick-ups, trunks of their cars or whatever vehicle they have. They may use a tent/table, etc. in their space. Teen masters of art
Teens will explore the techniques used by the great masters of art on May 8 at 3:30 p.m. at the Canfield library. Pointillism-Dots making a Painting. After viewing works of art, teens will use an 8 inch by 10 inch canvas and add their first initial by using a pencil eraser or paint brush tip to create small dots of various primary colors. Registration is required. Wear old clothing. The maximum number of participants in 12 in class.
Teen Tuesdays at the library
Have a snack and join your friends to do some fun activities on May 2 at 3 p.m. at the Canfield library. Topics will vary monthly. This program is for teens and is for those in grades seven and up.
Coloring for grown-ups
Join the Canfield library on May 15 from 10-11:30 a.m. and tap into your creative side with the newest relaxation craze: coloring for grown-ups. Colored pencils and markers will be provided, along with intricate abstract and themed design sheets. This program is for teens and adults only.
Crayon art
Do you want to learn how to create your own masterpiece using crayons? Join the Canfield library on May 25 at 6:30 p.m., where you will get to create your own crayon art that you will get to take home that day. Learn 10 easy steps for starting a garden at the Canfield library on May 13 at 11 a.m. Then get started right away: participants will receive free cuttings from a hosta plant. Register to reserve your plant. This event is for adults.
Celebrity book club to meet
Catch up on all the juicy celebrity gossip at the Canfield library on May 22 at 11 a.m. The group will discuss books by or about famous people. Or even books that made people famous. The selection this month is “Born to Run” by Bruce Springsteen. This event is for adults.

Attend this monthly book club at the Canfield library on May 30 at 6:30 p.m. to discuss titles chosen “off the shelves” of the Canfield library’s Book Club room. May will feature “Hillbilly Elegy” by J.D. Vance. This event is for adults.

Mill Creek Chapter to meet on May 9
The Mill Creek Chapter of the American Business Women’s Association will host its May 9 meeting at A La Cart in Canfield. The dinner will begin at 6:30 p.m. and there will be no speaker, only a business meeting will follow. The menu is creamed chicken over biscuit, roast pork, mashed potatoes, California blend of vegetables, tossed salad, applesauce, Jello and apple cake for dessert. Summer Discovery to be May 1 until July 31
Visit a Mahoning County public library or sign up online on or after May 1 to register for this year’s Summer Discovery Program. This year’s theme is “Build a Better World.” All who register will receive free coupons, just for signing up. Children can complete activities or read books to earn prizes (while supplies last) and to earn a chance to win a gift card. Italian man and woman to be honored at festival, applications accepted
The Greater Youngstown Italian Fest 2017 is seeking nominations from family members or friends regarding their favorite Italian man or Italian woman. The nominees would be considered for the highest honor and if selected would be introduced in person at the festival ceremony on Aug. 4 at 5 p.m. in downtown Youngstown. Local 4-H’ers prepare for upcoming events
4-H’ers Unlimited Club recently had its election for officers including the following: President - Lindsey Knauf, Vice President - Alexis Pomponio, Secretary - Sammie Johnson, Treasurer/Assistant Secretary - Kaleigh Williams, Health Leader - Justine Knauf, Safety Officer - Kieran Pellin and Recreation Officer - Madison Gatto. Club members collected donations for a small animal-themed basket that will be donated to the 4-H Endowment Dinner on April 29 at 5 p.m. at the St. Michael’s Family Life Center in Canfield. Tales to tails
Sign up to read aloud to a registered therapy dog on May 3 at 6 p.m. at the Canfield library. Readers of all levels and abilities are welcome. This event helps develop reading skills, promotes confidence and encourages a love of reading. Each session is 15 minutes. Bring a book of your choice. This event is for children in grades K and up. Mahoning County 4-H endowment dinner and auction to be April 29
Mark your calendars to join Mahoning County 4-H for a night of food, fun and fellowship. The first annual 4-H Endowment Dinner and Auction will take place on April 29 at St. Michael’s Family Life Center, located at 300 North Broad Street in Canfield. A silent auction will begin at 5 p.m. with dinner starting at 6 p.m. and a live auction to follow. Auction items range from gift baskets to weed trimmers to tractor toys to 2017 OSU Football tickets and more. Proceeds from this auction will benefit the Mahoning County 4-H Endowment fund, an interest-bearing account maintained at the Ohio State University, which is used to benefit Mahoning county 4-H. This fund allows 4-H members to partake in many leadership and team building events such as the Ohio 4-H Leadership Camp, Ohio 4-H Sea Camp, 4-H Camp Whitewood and leadership conferences in Washington D.C. To purchase tickets for the Endowment Dinner and Auction, contact the Mahoning County Extension Office at 330-533-5538. Adult tickets are $20, youth ages 19 and under are $10, and a table for eight is $180. Tickets will be sold up to the event and also at the door April 29.

Prepare for Kindergarten through play at the Canfield library on May 12 at 10 a.m. Read a story and have fun with developmentally appropriate games and activities that you can do with your child to help them get ready for Kindergarten. GA to meet twice this week
Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting is offered every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another is offered every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (in Cornersburg). Both meetings begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and last about 1-1/2 hours. Those who believe gambling has affected any part of their lives are urged to attend. Victorian Players sponsors trip to Playhouse Square
The Victorian Players Theatre, Inc. is sponsoring a bus trip to Playhouse Square in Cleveland on May 13. Cardinal Mooney High School announces 14th annual “Celebrate Mooney” auction
Cardinal Mooney High School has set the date for its 14th annual fundraising Auction as April 29. The largest fundraising event of the year will take place at the school, located at 2545 Erie St, in Youngstown, from 5:30-11 p.m. Cocktails and a silent auction will begin at 5 p.m. with dinner at 7 p.m. Tickets are available by calling the school at 330-788-5007 or online through the Auction link on www.cardinalmooney.com Individual tickets are $75, which include dinner and open bar. Fairgrounds to be location for Color Dash 5K
There will be a Color Dash 5K UV Splash 5K at the Canfield Fairgrounds, located at 7265 Columbiana-Canfield Road in Canfield, on May 5. The packet pick-up and on-site registration will start at 6:30 p.m. with the color dash begins at 8:30 p.m. Start in white apparel and get covered with an array of glowing colors at each kilometer. The color explosion will be at 9:30 p.m. The Color Dash gives back half of all profits to its partner charities, as well as 100 percent of all sponsorships raised. At the Canfield UV Splash, 50 percent of the profits from registration and merchandise stay local, benefitting the SANE (Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner) Program at Mercy Health Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley SART (Sexual Assault Response Team). These programs provide support care packages for victims of sexual violence and to promote further education for frontline care providers working with victims of sexual violence as well as community education. Walkers and Runners of all ages are invited to participate in this fundraising event.
Pink Ribbon Golf Classic to be July 17
The annual Pink Ribbon Golf Classic will take place at Avalon Lakes Golf and Country Club on July 17. All proceeds from this event will go directly to the American Cancer Society.
