Book a librarian during the month of May

If you would like a personal introduction to resources available at the library or need more time with a librarian than you can get over the phone or if you just walk in, make an appointment to book a library during the month of May. Book-a-Librarian sessions are tailored to meet the specific needs of the individual. A library staff member will give undivided attention to customers who want in-depth help with a variety of library services, including learning to use a computer, email or the internet; downloading e-books and audiobooks; researching a topic; discovering new books and authors to read and enjoy and business, non-profit or genealogy help. Bands to host concert

The spring concert of the Boardman bands will take place on May 3 at 7 p.m. in the Boardman Performing Arts Center. The concert will feature Boardman High School’s symphonic band and wind ensemble. Also performing at the concert will be the band’s second Senior Soloist for the school year, Emily Mook on the flute. Mook is the daughter of Mark and Kathy Mook. Donations of $3 for adults and $2 for students will be accepted at the door. Senior citizens will be admitted free of charge. The Boardman bands are under the direction of Thomas M. Ruggieri, Timothy P. Tuite and Michael J. Shevock.

Loghurst Museum to host sale

There will be a Trunk and Treasure sale for the Canfield Heritage Foundation (Loghurst) every first and third Saturday of each month during summer, starting on May 6 (on days that the museum is open) from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. with set-up from 8-9 a.m. The cost is $10 per vehicle. Vendors are able to sell from their pick-ups, trunks of their cars or whatever vehicle they have. They may use a tent/table, etc. in their space. Contact Loghurst at 330-533-4330 for more information and registration forms. If there is room, they will also accept vendors the day of the sale.

Rummage sale to be May 4-6

There will be a rummage sale at the Woodworth Church of the Brethren, located at 30 E. Western Reserve Road, on May 4 and 5 from 8:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. and on May 6 from 8:30 a.m. until noon. Saturday is bag day. Lunch and baked goods will also be available for purchase.

Share your fan art at the library

Are you part of a fandom and want to share your enthusiasm with others? Make wall art by using old book pages as the background and come to the Boardman library on May 17 at 7 p.m. with a design that represents what you fangirl or fanboy about. Registration is required. This event is for teens in grades 7-12.

Teen Advisory Board to meet in May

Check out the monthly TAB (Teen Advisory Board) meeting on May 3 at 6:30 p.m. at the Boardman library. The group meets on the first Wednesday of the month at the Boardman library. Help plan and support teen activities at the library. Meet new people and have fun. Newcomers are always welcome. This event is for teens in grades 7-12.

Local libraries to have May closings

All libraries in the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County system will be closed on May 14, 28 and 29 (Memorial Day).

Check into Chess

Join the Boardman library to play chess on May 7 from 1:30-4:30 p.m. This is a family program for all ages. If you would like to learn to play, they will be happy to teach you.

It’s all about yarn

Bring in your crochet, knitting, plastic canvas or “anything with yarn” project and learn from one another on May 19 at 11 a.m. at the Boardman library. Participants are encouraged to bring all yarn UFOs (unfinished objects). This event is for adults.

Social media workshop - advanced

This class on May 1 at 6:30 p.m. at the Boardman library will go over top examples of using social media to market to an audience. It is recommended that you know how to use and set-up a business account on Facebook before you attend this workshop. This event is free and paid methods of promotion will be discussed. Preserving your family heirlooms

This is your introduction to Preservation and Conservation issues relevant to the genealogist. Whether the information is in the form of original documents and artifacts, or as generated research findings, this seminar on May 30 at 6:30 p.m. at the Boardman library will cover basic care, storage and handling techniques; repairing and reformatting; technology migration; disaster response and legacy planning. This event is for adults and teens. Registration for all programs is required. Gardening tips shared at library event

Come to the Boardman library on May 20 at 10 a.m. for quick and easy solutions to problems gardeners face every day. There will be 60-65 “tips” to create and maintain your garden. This event is for adults.

I Read YA! book club to meet

The I Read YA! Book Club will meet on May 15 at 6:30 p.m. at the Boardman library. This event is for adult fans of Young Adult Literature from ages 18 and up. Talk about why you like YA. Read and discuss YA literature. This month we will be discussing “Salt to the Sea” by Ruta Sepetys.

Reader’s Choice Book Club to have May 8 meeting

The group will discuss “A Tree Grows in Brooklyn” by Betty Smith on May 8 at 7 p.m. at the Boardman library. Share your favorite books and find out what new ones are being published. They will preview June’s book, “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks” by Rebecca Skloot. This event is for adults.

Blood pressure screening at the library

There will be a blood pressure screening by the Mahoning Chapter of the American Red Cross at the Boardman library from 12:30-2:30 p.m. on May 1.

Local Friends to meet in May

There will be a Friends of the Boardman Library program and meeting on May 8 at 10 a.m. at the Boardman library. The program will be “The ESPN Effect” presented by Dr. Adam Earnheardt, YSU Department of Art and Communication. Meeting to follow the presentation. This event is for adults.

Puzzle swap

Swap six of your once-done jigsaw puzzles with others on May 10 at 4 p.m. at the Boardman library. This event takes place every second Wednesday of the month at the Boardman library. This event is for adults.

Summer Discovery to be May 1 until July 31

Visit a Mahoning County public library or sign up online on or after May 1 to register for this year’s Summer Discovery Program. This year’s theme is “Build a Better World.” All who register will receive free coupons, just for signing up. Children can complete activities or read books to earn prizes (while supplies last) and to earn a chance to win a gift card. Children who complete the program will also be invited to a breakfast in July, sponsored by Home Savings and Loan and Sweeney Chevy Buick GMC, featuring Rosemary Wells, best-selling author of the Max and Ruby books. Teens and adults can read books to earn prizes (while supplies last), too, and earn a chance to win a gift card. Applications for Italian festival scholarship available

This year’s applications for a Youngstown State University Scholarship from The Greater Youngstown Italian Fest may be retrieved from the festival’s website http://www.youngstownitalianfest.org/ or by contacting Deborah Mottle at mottlesmurals@gmail.com. Applicants must attend Youngstown State University and be of Italian descent in order to be eligible. The deadline for applicants is June 15, 2017.

Italian man and woman to be honored at festival, applications accepted

The Greater Youngstown Italian Fest 2017 is seeking nominations from family members or friends regarding their favorite Italian man or Italian woman. The nominees would be considered for the highest honor and if selected would be introduced in person at the festival ceremony on Aug. 4 at 5 p.m. in downtown Youngstown. Applications are available to be retrieved from the festival website at http://www.youngstownitalianfest.org/italian-man-woman-year/ or submit an essay with details regarding your nominee. The following details are recommended: name, birth date and location of birth, spouse’s name, parents names and or grandparents, sisters and brothers names, favorite past times or hobbies, what part of Italy they were from originally and what they have accomplished during the span of their life. Mill Creek Chapter to meet on May 9

The Mill Creek Chapter of the American Business Women’s Association will host its May 9 meeting at A La Cart in Canfield. The dinner will begin at 6:30 p.m. and there will be no speaker, only a business meeting will follow. The menu is creamed chicken over biscuit, roast pork, mashed potatoes, California blend of vegetables, tossed salad, applesauce, Jello and apple cake for dessert. Local 4-H’ers prepare for upcoming events

4-H’ers Unlimited Club recently had its election for officers including the following: President - Lindsey Knauf, Vice President - Alexis Pomponio, Secretary - Sammie Johnson, Treasurer/Assistant Secretary - Kaleigh Williams, Health Leader - Justine Knauf, Safety Officer - Kieran Pellin and Recreation Officer - Madison Gatto. Club members collected donations for a small animal-themed basket that will be donated to the 4-H Endowment Dinner on April 29 at 5 p.m. at the St. Michael’s Family Life Center in Canfield. The club filled Easter eggs for the Berlin Ellsworth Community Easter Egg Hunt that will be at the Western Reserve School. Contact Kent Knauf at 330-702-1843 for more information.

Lego my library

Meet at the Boardman library on May 13 at 10 a.m. and enjoy creating Lego designs. Legos will be provided. This event is for children, ages 6 and up.

Night owl story time

There will be an evening story time for children, ages 3-5, on May 2, 16, 23 and 30 at 7 p.m. at the Boardman library. Each child must be accompanied by an adult in this 30-minute program featuring finger plays, stories and a craft activity.

Make it for Mom

There will be Mother’s Day stories and a craft at the Boardman library on May 9 at 7 p.m. Preschoolers must attend with a parent to this one hour program. This event is for children of all ages.

Tales and talk for 2s and 3s

Join the Boardman library on May 3, 17, 24 and 31 at 10 a.m. for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader.

Bonding with babies and books

This program is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6- to 23-months. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize every Tuesday in May at 10 a.m. at the Boardman library.

Playtime at your library

Prepare for Kindergarten through play at the Boardman library on May 10 at 10 a.m. Read a story and have fun with developmentally appropriate games and activities that you can do with your child to help them get ready for Kindergarten. This event is for children ages 2-6. All children under 7 must be accompanied by an adult to this one-hour program.

Overeaters Anonymous to have local meetings

Overeaters Anonymous is offering meetings at several local locations and on a variety of days. On Saturdays at 10 a.m., there will be a meeting at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in the Church Hall, Room 2, located at 4453 Warren-Sharon Road in Vienna, Ohio. This location is handicapped accessible. On Sundays at 7 p.m., there will be a meeting at Shenango Presbyterian Church, located at 3144 Wilmington Road (Route 18) in New Castle, Pa. This location is handicapped accessible. On Mondays, a meeting will take place at 1 p.m. at the Girard Multigenerational Center, located at 443 Trumbull Avenue in Girard. This location is handicapped accessible. On Wednesdays, a meeting will take place at 7:30 p.m. at Valley Care - Northside Medical Center in the Medical Education Building, auditorium A, located at 500 Gypsy Lane in Youngstown. This location is handicapped accessible. On Thursdays at 6 p.m., a meeting will take place in Faith Chapel Fellowship Church, located at 511 E. GA to meet twice this week

Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting is offered every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another is offered every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (in Cornersburg). Both meetings begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and last about 1-1/2 hours. Those who believe gambling has affected any part of their lives are urged to attend. Victorian Players sponsors trip to Playhouse Square

The Victorian Players Theatre, Inc. is sponsoring a bus trip to Playhouse Square in Cleveland on May 13. They will see a matinee performance of “Something Rotten.” The bus will depart the theatre, located at 702 Mahoning Ave. in Youngstown, at 11 a.m. A boxed lunch will be provided. Cardinal Mooney High School announces 14th annual “Celebrate Mooney” auction

Cardinal Mooney High School has set the date for its 14th annual fundraising Auction as April 29. The largest fundraising event of the year will take place at the school, located at 2545 Erie St, in Youngstown, from 5:30-11 p.m. Cocktails and a silent auction will begin at 5 p.m. with dinner at 7 p.m. Tickets are available by calling the school at 330-788-5007 or online through the Auction link on www.cardinalmooney.com Individual tickets are $75, which include dinner and open bar. RSVP by April 15. This year’s theme is “Celebrate Mooney: Embracing Our Past, Highlighting Our Present, and Building a Bright Future.” As part of the celebration, Mooney will be honoring Diane Mastro Nard, Honorary Chairwoman and former CMHS teacher and Speech Coach. Trash and Treasure sale to be May 3 and 4

The Boardman United Methodist Church, located at 6809 Market St. in Boardman, will host a spring Trash and Treasure sale on May 3 and 4 from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. Thursday is bargain bag day. Coffee, lunch and doughnuts will be available for purchase.

Pink Ribbon Golf Classic to be July 17

The annual Pink Ribbon Golf Classic will take place at Avalon Lakes Golf and Country Club on July 17. All proceeds from this event will go directly to the American Cancer Society.
