Saxon Club hosts flea market
The Saxon Club, located at 710 South Meridian Road in Austintown, will host a flea market, beginning on May 2 and running each Tuesday into November, weather permitting. The flea market will begin at 8 a.m. (venders may set up early) and it will end at 2 p.m. Large spaces are available to venders at the cost of $5 per space. A variety of items will be available to purchase, including household good, books and more. Refreshments will also be available for purchase. Proceeds from the flea market will be used to maintain the Saxon Club parking lot.

If you would like a personal introduction to resources available at the library or need more time with a librarian than you can get over the phone or if you just walk in, make an appointment to book a library during the month of May. Book-a-Librarian sessions are tailored to meet the specific needs of the individual. Loghurst Museum to host Trunk and Treasure sale
There will be a Trunk and Treasure sale for the Canfield Heritage Foundation (Loghurst) every first and third Saturday of each month during summer, starting on May 6 (on days that the museum is open) from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. with set-up from 8-9 a.m. The cost is $10 per vehicle. Vendors are able to sell from their pick-ups, trunks of their cars or whatever vehicle they have. They may use a tent/table, etc. in their space. Spring senior citizens dinner to be May 11
Food, fun and entertainment are in store for Austintown seniors, 65 and older, on May 11 for the Spring Senior Citizens Dinner. Board members, student groups and school staff will serve dinner during this bi-annual event at 4 p.m. in the Fitch High School cafeteria. Students from the high school speech team will entertain throughout the dinner. Tickets for the senior dinner are $2 and advance reservations are required. Local libraries to have May closings
All libraries in the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County system will be closed on May 14, 28 and 29 (Memorial Day).
Battle of the books
Sixteen YA books will face off in head-to-head competition at the Austintown library during regular hours in May, but only one can win the Battle of the Books. Fill out and submit your book bracket to be eligible for a random prize drawing. This event is for teens in grades 7-12.
Teen Advisory Board to meet in May
Join the Austintown area TAB (Teen Advisory Board) on May 6 at 3 p.m. at the Austintown library. Help plan and support teen activities at the library. Meet new people and have fun. Snacks will be provided. This event is for teens in grades 7-12.

Summer Discovery to be May 1 until July 31
Visit a Mahoning County public library or sign up online on or after May 1 to register for this year’s Summer Discovery Program. This year’s theme is “Build a Better World.” All who register will receive free coupons, just for signing up. Children can complete activities or read books to earn prizes (while supplies last) and to earn a chance to win a gift card. Children who complete the program will also be invited to a breakfast in July, sponsored by Home Savings and Loan and Sweeney Chevy Buick GMC, featuring Rosemary Wells, best-selling author of the Max and Ruby books. Applications for Italian festival scholarship available
This year’s applications for a Youngstown State University Scholarship from The Greater Youngstown Italian Fest may be retrieved from the festival’s website http://www.youngstownitalianfest.org/ or by contacting Deborah Mottle at mottlesmurals@gmail.com. Italian man and woman to be honored at festival, applications accepted
The Greater Youngstown Italian Fest 2017 is seeking nominations from family members or friends regarding their favorite Italian man or Italian woman. The nominees would be considered for the highest honor and if selected would be introduced in person at the festival ceremony on Aug. 4 at 5 p.m. in downtown Youngstown. Mill Creek Chapter to meet on May 9
The Mill Creek Chapter of the American Business Women’s Association will host its May 9 meeting at A La Cart in Canfield. The dinner will begin at 6:30 p.m. and there will be no speaker, only a business meeting will follow. Local 4-H’ers prepare for upcoming events
4-H’ers Unlimited Club recently had its election for officers including the following: President - Lindsey Knauf, Vice President - Alexis Pomponio, Secretary - Sammie Johnson, Treasurer/Assistant Secretary - Kaleigh Williams, Health Leader - Justine Knauf, Safety Officer - Kieran Pellin and Recreation Officer - Madison Gatto. Club members collected donations for a small animal-themed basket that will be donated to the 4-H Endowment Dinner on April 29 at 5 p.m. at the St. Michael’s Family Life Center in Canfield. Prepare for Kindergarten through play at the Austintown library on May 8 at 6:30 p.m. Read a story and have fun with developmentally appropriate games and activities that you can do with your child to help them get ready for Kindergarten. This event is for children ages 2-6. All children under 7 must be accompanied by an adult to this one-hour program.
Pre-kindergarten story time
This program is for 4- and 5-years-olds to help develop pre-literacy and kindergarten readiness skills. You will use books, stories, rhymes, music, movement and crafts to help your child get ready for kindergarten at this program every Wednesday in May at the Austintown library at 11:30 a.m.
Bonding with babies and books
This program is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6- to 23-months. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize every Tuesday in May at 10 a.m. at the Austintown library.

Join the Austintown library every Wednesday in May at 10 a.m. for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader.

GA to meet twice this week
Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting is offered every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another is offered every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (in Cornersburg). Victorian Players sponsors trip to Playhouse Square
The Victorian Players Theatre, Inc. is sponsoring a bus trip to Playhouse Square in Cleveland on May 13. They will see a matinee performance of “Something Rotten.” The bus will depart the theatre, located at 702 Mahoning Ave. in Youngstown, at 11 a.m. A boxed lunch will be provided. Cardinal Mooney High School announces 14th annual “Celebrate Mooney” auction
Cardinal Mooney High School has set the date for its 14th annual fundraising Auction as April 29. The largest fundraising event of the year will take place at the school, located at 2545 Erie St, in Youngstown, from 5:30-11 p.m. Cocktails and a silent auction will begin at 5 p.m. with dinner at 7 p.m. Tickets are available by calling the school at 330-788-5007 or online through the Auction link on www.cardinalmooney.com Individual tickets are $75, which include dinner and open bar. RSVP by April 15. Local group to collect for Measure-Up Campaign
Knights of Columbus, Immacolata Council #15086 will be collecting for the Measure-Up Campaign at the Sparkle Market located in Cornersburg on April 30 from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. The Measure-Up Campaign is run state-wide in the spring of each year, with the goal being to help those less fortunate with developmental disabilities. The money the council collects is divided, with 80 percent going locally to aid the children at The Rich Center for Autism, located on the Y.S.U. campus. The other 20 percent goes to the Knights of Columbus State Council to be used for projects like Special Olympics and other projects that benefit children with developmental disabilities. All the money goes to help the children. The group will be presenting a check to the children at The Rich Center this fall.
Smart money picture bingo
Celebrate Smart Money Week at the Austintown library on April 29 at 11 a.m. with fun and prizes for the whole family. Picture Bingo for all ages. Each child will receive a piggy bank. Children must be accompanied by an adult to this half-hour program. This is for the family.
IHM Run Festival to be June 8
This is the annual 5K run that gets the local community festival off to a great running start. The date is set for June 8. The start time is 7 p.m. Runners, be sure to mark your calendar now so you don’t miss out on one of the longest standing 5K runs in the area. For a $10 entry fee, runners can run through local neighborhood roads and finish near the festival grounds. All runners must be registered to participate. Online registration is available at runsignup.com/race/oh/austintown/ihmfestival5k. Race day registration will start at 5 p.m. in front of the education building at 4490 Norquest Blvd. in Austintown. Pink Ribbon Golf Classic to be July 17
The annual Pink Ribbon Golf Classic will take place at Avalon Lakes Golf and Country Club on July 17. All proceeds from this event will go directly to the American Cancer Society.
