YOUNGSTOWN

The police department’s Internal Affairs Division is investigating after an officer shot a dog about 9 a.m. Tuesday in the 2000 block of Drummond Avenue on the East Side.

Reports said an officer was at a home to follow up on a theft complaint when a pit bull charged down the driveway. The dog followed the officer as he retreated behind his cruiser and the officer then shot the dog three times in self-defense, said Lt. Brian Butler, head of Internal Affairs.

Butler said the dog was taken to Animal Charity and it was put down. Butler said the pit bull had a history of biting people.
