Men’s golf team rebounds

The Youngstown State men’s golf team improved by 10 shots during the second-round of play at the Horizon League Championships on Monday at the Mission Inn Resort El Campeon Golf Course.

All five YSU golfers shot 80-or-below for their second rounds as the Penguins carded a 309. YSU opened the event with a 319 on Sunday.

The Penguins moved up to seventh place ahead of Northern Kentucky (634) following the first two days with a score of 628. Cleveland State maintains the lead with at 596 by just two shots over Oakland.

For the second consecutive day, Jason McQuown had the Penguins’ low round firing a four-over-par 76. McQuown sits in 14th place with a two-round total of 151. Evan Standohar sits in 24th place with a two-round 157 moving up three spots from round one. Senior Thomas Lydic is tied for 28th place with a two-round total of 158. Lydic had a 78 for his second round. Justin Hallapy carded a 77 and has two-round score of 162 and is 33rd. Hallapy was three-over par for his round before a double bogey at 18 dropped him to a 77. He had birdie on No. 15 and posted 12 pars in his round.

Steven Sveda has a two-round score of 165 after a second round 80.

The final round of the championships is set for today.

Shutt has lead for women’s golf

Howey-In-The-Hills, Fla.

Youngstown State freshman Katlyn Shutt has taken a four-shot lead as the race for the title is between four teams after two rounds at the Horizon League Women’s Golf Championships at the Mission Inn Resort Las Carolinas Course.

Shutt has a two-round total of 144 after firing a one-under par 71 on Monday. She opened with a first-round 73.

She leads the tournament by four shots over Cleveland State’s Rayna Oosterhius who has a 148 while Northern Kentucky’s Allison Leigeb, the first-round leader is at 149.

The team race is extremely tight with four schools within seven shots of the top spot. Cleveland State shot a phenomenal 302 and sits atop the leaderboard with a 302. NKU, which shot a 304 on Sunday, fell back with a 318 on Monday to 622.

The Penguins had a five-shot improvement from their first round carding a 305 on Monday for a 625 and Oakland dropped from second to fourth with a total of 628.

Penguins freshman Reva Morris moved up to fifth place with a two-round total of 153 following a second-round 75. Junior Courtney Shutt is tied for 12th with a 158. She had an 80 on Monday highlighted by a birdie on No. 1. Senior Mia Barchetti shot an 84 and has two-round score of 170. Christina Cooper improved eight shots from her opening round with an 86 and sits at 180 for the tournament.

The Penguins will be paired with Cleveland State and Northern Kentucky in the final pairings today.

Softball’s Moffatt is Player of Week

Indianapolis

Youngstown State senior Brittney Moffatt has been named the Horizon League Player of the Week. This is the second weekly award of Moffatt’s career.

This is the third time this season a YSU player has won a weekly award. Freshman Maddi Lusk was named pitcher of the week on March 27 and freshman Tatum Christy earned the Player of the Week award on April 3.

Moffatt, who won her first award on April 25, 2016, led the Penguins to a 6-0 week and batted .429 (9-for-21) with three runs scored and nine RBIs.

She had four multi-hit games and three multi-RBI contests during the week. Moffatt, who reached base in every game and did not strike out, went 2-for-4 with four RBIs in a 7-4 win over Wright State and had a hit in five of the six games last week.

Basketball team gets Jacob Brown

YOUNGSTOWN

Jacob Brown has signed a national letter of intent to continue his academic and basketball career at Youngstown State University.

Brown, a 6-foot-9 forward from Clemmons, N.C., spent last season at Forest Hill Academy and averaged 16.7 points, 6.4 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game. He was also named to the Triad High School All-Star Classic.

“Jacob has a tremendous upside,” YSU coach Jerrod Calhoun said. “He’s long and lanky and a very skilled, well-rounded player. He is a good fit for our style of play.”

Brown joins Naz Bohannon (Lorain) in the 2017-18 recruiting class.
