Penguins to raise funds for cancer awareness

The Youngstown State baseball team will participate in the Lace Up 4 Pediatric Cancer event in conjunction with the Go4theGoal Foundation at Friday’s game against Valparaiso at Eastwood Field.

Players and coaches for Youngstown State and Valparaiso will wear yellow shoelaces to raise awareness for childhood cancer. All money from admission tickets, as well as a portion of concessions sales, will be donated to the Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley. Donations will also be accepted.

To reward fans, the Mahoning Valley Scrappers will give away a Jim Tressel bobblehead or Scrappers t-shirts or other giveaway items to the first 100 fans.

YSU’s Team IMPACT player Jacob Sypert will throw out the first pitch. Sypert is a seventh grader from McDonald, who is a cancer survivor.

Penn State Shenango names Smith

SHARON, PA.

Andre Smith, a former Youngstown State University basketball standout and assistant basketball coach, has accepted the position as Coordinator of Athletic Programs and Recruitment and Head Basketball Coach at Penn State Shenango.

Smith most recently was employed at Lourdes University in Sylvania, where he was the athletic director and head men’s basketball coach.

He brings 12 years of higher education experience in admissions and multi-cultural affairs, as well as 15 years of collegiate head coaching and assistant coaching experience, to his new position. Smith also had four years’ experience as head coach in the international professional ranks.

Smith graduated from Youngstown State University with a bachelor of science degree in education. He has an associate of science degree in recreation from Lakeland Community College in Mattoon, Ill.

Calhoun to speak to Curbstone

Jerrod Calhoun, Youngstown State University’s new men’s basketball coach, will speak at a Curbstone Coaches dinner on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at Drake’s Landing banquet Center.

Cost of the buffet dinner is $11 and reservations are not needed. The public is encouraged to attend.

Kent State offers Indians tickets

The Kent State University Sport Administration Program will present Kent State Day at Progressive Field on Saturday when the Cleveland Indians host the Seattle Mariners at 4:10 p.m.

The KSU men’s basketball team will be recognized on-field for their 2017 Mid-American Conference Championship and their NCAA Tournament appearance.

First pitches will be thrown by head coach Rob Senderoff and Kent State Alumni Brian Winters of the New York Jets.

Tickets include a customized New Era Block “C” hat with the Kent State University athletic logo. The hats will be available to the first 1,500 attendees to enter the Right Field Terrace.

Red Sox pitcher suspended 4 games

NEW YORK

Red Sox pitcher Matt Barnes has been suspended four games and fined for throwing a fastball past the head of Baltimore star Manny Machado.

The commissioner’s office issued the penalty Monday. The Red Sox are off and Barnes is appealing, meaning the reliever can continue to pitch until the process is done.

Barnes was ejected Sunday after sailing a fastball past Machado’s helmet at Baltimore.
