Shutt, Penguins off to hot start in HL

HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, FLA.

YSU is in third place after the opening round of the Horizon League Championships which started on Sunday at the Las Colinas Golf Course at the Mission Inn Resort.

Northern Kentucky carded a 304 to seize the first round lead while Oakland is second with a 312 and YSU is third with a 315.

Leading the way for the Penguins was freshman Katlyn Shutt who had a 1-over-par score of 73. She is one shot behind NKU’s Allison Leigeb who had an opening round 72.

Shutt had 12 pars, three birdies, two bogeys and a double bogey in her first career Horizon League round. She had birdies on No. 3 and No. 5 and was two-under par through the first six holes before a double bogey on seven dropped her back to even par. She was even par through the first 12 holes and the first 15. Shutt had a birdie on the par-five 14th hole.

Tied for 10th are Courtney Shutt and freshman Reva Morris. Shutt and Morris each had opening round 78s for the Penguins.

McQuown shoots 75 in Horizon tourney

HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, FLA.

Sophomore Jason McQuown shot a 3-over par 75 on Sunday to lead the men’s golf team on the first day of competition at the Horizon League Championships.

McQuown is in 14th place after the first day with his opening round 75. His round featured 31 pars, four bogeys and a birdie. McQuown birdied the par-5 14th hole at the Mission Inn Resort. He was just two-over after his first 11 holes.

In the team race, YSU is eighth after an opening round 319. The Penguins are nine shots back of seventh place Green Bay. Cleveland State leads the event with a 294 while Valparaiso is in second place at 247.

Evan Standohar had an impressive performance in his first Horizon League Championships round. Standohar carded a 79 and was in the first grouping of the day and is in 27th place. He had eight pars, seven bogeys, two birdies and a double bogey in his round. He birdied No. 14 and No. 18 during the round.

Senior Thomas Lydic had an opening round 80 and is 29th. Lydic was two-over par on the back nine and his round featured nine pars and a birdie on No. 1.

Lacatena, Minney help Penguins sweep GB

GREEN BAY, WIS.

YSU (23-24, 11-7 Horizon League) picked up its second straight Horizon League series sweep with a 5-1 win over Green Bay (2-28, 1-15) on Sunday.

Senior Maria Lacatena went 3 for 3 with a pair of doubles while senior Sarah Dowd went 2 for 4 with two RBIs. Senior Caitlyn Minney pitched a complete game and struck out six to pick up the win.

Junior Hannah Lucas also had a pair of hits for the Penguins, who collected 10 hits.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Penguins dominate to share HL crown

MILWAUKEE

YSU defeated Milwaukee 6-1 on Sunday afternoon at the Elite River Glen Sports Club. The win gives the Penguins a share of the Horizon League title with UIC and Cleveland State.

The Penguins (14-8 overall and 8-1 in the Horizon League) will be the top seed for the Horizon League Championships which begin on Friday. The Penguins get a bye to the semifinals and will first be in action on Saturday afternoon.

Both UIC and Cleveland State picked up wins on Sunday (UIC 7-0 over Oakland and CSU 7-0 over Green Bay) to share the title with YSU. The Penguins earn the tiebreaker among the three schools to earn the top seed.

YSU took the doubles point from the Panthers (9-14 and 3-6) with wins at No. 2 and No. 3. Winning at No. 2 were Sofia Macias and Imaan Hassim by a 6-3 score while at No. 3, Dominika Lackova and Nehel Sahni won 6-2.

In singles play, the Penguins won five of six contests with four wins coming in straight sets.

At No. 1, Lackova picked up a 6-4, 6-1 victory while Sahni won at No. 5 7-5, 6-0 to give the Penguins a 3-0 lead. UWM won at No. 3 before Cassandra Moraleja won 6-4, 6-3 at No. 6 to clinch the victory.

With the match clinched, Noelly Nsimba finished off a 6-1, 3-6, 6-4 win at No. 2 and Hassim won 6-7, 6-2, 10-4 at No. 4.

MEN’S TENNIS

YSU edges Marquette to close regular season

MILWAUKEE

The Youngstown State men’s tennis team capped off a successful trip to Wisconsin and the best regular-season in school history with a 4-3 win over Marquette on Sunday morning at the Helfaer Tennis Stadium.

The Penguins (18-7) won the doubles point and claimed three singles matches to defeat the Golden Eagles (13-8).

Danylo Veremeichuk earned the clinching victory for the Penguins at No. 2 singles. Five of the six matches went three sets including Veremeichuk’s.

The Penguins won the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 2. Winning at No. 1 was Mitch Maroscher and Thomas Rodrigues by a 6-4 score while at No. 2, Garretto and Veremeichuk won 6-2.

In singles play, winning for the Penguins were Luke Purser and Rodrigues in three sets. Rodrigues won his 24th match of the season with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 win over Greg Anderson at No. 3. At No. 5, Purser also rallied after dropping the first set for a 1-6, 6-4, 7-6 win over Nick Dykema.

Veremeichuk earned the winning dual point with a hard-fought 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 win over Luke Smrek at No. 2 singles.
