EXTREME DRIVING Safety program for teens

Ten students took part in Sunday’s Tire Rack Survival Teen Driving School program in Boardman Park, which gave them skills beyond those offered in most traditional driver’s-education courses for handling adverse driving conditions such as slippery roads. Some general information about the one-day course:

Trained, qualified in-car instructors offer simulated situations and classroom experience for students to help them learn more sophisticated car safety and control.

Participants are challenged to handle abnormal vehicle behavior in safe, supervised environments. Also, instructors are in the cars with them.

Students are asked to use their own vehicles so they can better understand how their cars react under varying driving conditions.

In the classroom, students learn about proper mirror placement, hand positions and seating, theories of weight transfer, situational awareness and the use of long-distance vision, then are subjected to a series of simulations based on real-world situations.
