McDonald sets school record in 400 hurdles

Youngstown State’s Taylor McDonald set a school record in the 400m hurdles to lead four event winners for the Penguins Track and Field teams at the Jesse Owens Classic which concluded on Saturday at Ohio State’s Jesse Owens Stadium.

McDonald set a school record of 58.87 seconds in the 400m hurdles to win the event. The previous mark of 1:00.18 was set by Jen Shiley in 2015. McDonald was second to Shiley, but become the first runner to go under 59 seconds on Saturday.

Also winning events were Chad Zallow , Collin Harden and Jaliyah Elliott. Elliott won the 100m dash with a time of 11.60 seconds while Zallow won the 110m hurdles with a time of 13.71 seconds. Harden won the 400m hurdles with a time of 51.99 seconds.

McDonald won her event by 0.29 seconds ahead of Western Michigan’s Lindsey Hufnagel and Ohio State State’s Christine London (0.41 seconds).

Penguins’ bats hot in sweep over Phoenix

The Youngstown State softball team collected a combined 24 hits en route to a doubleheader sweep over Horizon League foe Green Bay on Saturday afternoon. The Penguins defeated the Phoenix, 7-0, and 10-2 in six innings.

The Penguins, who have won five straight league games, improve to 22-24 overall and 10-7 in the Horizon League while Green Bay falls to 2-26 overall and 1-13 in the league.

In the first game, juniors Hannah Lucas and Cali Mikovich each went 2-for-3 with a triple while junior Stevie Taylor and senior Brittney Moffatt each collected a pair of hits. Freshman pitcher Maddi Lusk struck out four and scattered nine hits in the complete-game shutout to pick up her 13th win of the season.

Senior Sarah Dowd‘s two-run single in the top of the first inning gave the Penguins a 2-0 cushion. Mikovich led off the top of the third with a triple to right-center field and scored on senior Maria Lacatena‘s sacrifice fly to put YSU up 3-0.

Penguins beat Green Bay for first time ever

The Youngstown State men’s tennis team defeated Green Bay for the first time in the program’s history with a 4-3 win over the Phoenix on Saturday afternoon. The Penguins picked up their fifth Horizon League win of the year, a school record.

The Penguins (17-7) and 5-2 and never defeated the Phoenix since the program’s first met back in 2002. Green Bay falls to 7-9 and 4-2 and close out the regular-season on Sunday vs. Green Bay.

YSU’s five Horizon League victories are the most in school history after winning four on three occasions. The 17 total wins this season is also a school record.

The Guins won the doubles point to put the pressure on Green Bay. At No. 1, Mitch Maroscher and Thomas Rodrigues won 6-3 while at No. 2, Danylo Veremeichuk and Joao Garretto also won 6-3.

In singles, Veremichuk opened things up on a strong note for the Penguins with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Matej Kostadinov at No. 2. Green Bay won at No. 6 by a 6-2, 6-4 score to get within 2-1.

Penguins sweep Green Bay 7-0

The Youngstown State women’s tennis team had an impressive performance sweeping Green Bay 7-0 on Saturday at the Western Racquet Club. The Penguins need to defeat Milwaukee on Sunday to earn a share of the Horizon League regular-season title.

Entering tomorrow’s action, UIC, Cleveland State and YSU are all 7-1 in league play. Wins by all three will create a three-way tie for the league title, however the Penguins will be the No. 1 seed at the Horizon League Championships which begin on Friday because of tiebreakers.

YSU beat Cleveland State, but lost to UIC. UIC beat the Penguins but lost to the Vikings. And CSU beat UIC, but lost to the Penguins. UIC plays host to Oakland while the Vikings are at Green Bay on Sunday.

Jeremy Quinlan pitched a five-hit complete game for his second straight home start to lead the Youngstown State baseball team to a 5-1 victory over Milwaukee on Saturday at Eastwood Field. The Penguins lost game one of the doubleheader 5-2.

Quinlan allowed five singles in the game, and the Panthers’ only run came on a wild pitch with two outs in the top of the second. The Penguins struck for two runs on four hits in the bottom of the inning to pick him up, and Quinlan cruised for the final seven innings.

The senior right-hander from Brookfield finished with seven strikeouts, and he did not walk a batter. He retired the final 11 hitters he faced, and he allowed only three baserunners over the final seven innings. Each of those runners were immediately retired on 5-4-3 double plays. Quinlan faced two batters over the minimum and made quick work of the Panthers, needing only 102 pitches and 2:11 to improve to 3-0 in six Horizon League starts.

With the Penguins down 1-0 heading into the bottom of the second, Alex Larivee and Trey Bridis led off the bottom of the inning with back-to-back singles. Lou Cardona singled two batters later to load the bases. Kyle Benyo’s sacrifice fly tied the game at 1-1, and Nico Padovan followed with an RBI single to give Quinlan a lead he went on to protect.
