Students showed off their talents during the first ever Austintown Middle School talent show on April 4.

The Austintown PTA put together the talent show for the students in grades 6-8 to have the opportunity for the student body to have fun and express themselves in various ways. Tryouts took place on March 6 and more than 60 students tried out. That number was cut down to 31 students and 27 acts for the final show.

The students practiced twice a week at school and then even more during their own time outside of school. The students had a pizza party, sponsored by Home Savings, during their dress rehearsal as a way to celebrate the talent show.

“We did a student show this morning for the sixth-grade,” said PTA President Lynn Mickey.

There was a variety of performances from dancers to singers, piano players to trumpet players and students who performed karate moves and one student who showed off his yo-yo skills.

Tickets were sold in advance for guests who wanted to reserve a seat and for those who didn’t purchase an advance ticket were able to buy one at the door.

“I’m very excited. I’ve been performing with Easy Street Productions and doing other little plays. It’s really fun,” said sixth-grader Alaina Protopapa who sang while using sign language to “Demons,” by Imagine Dragons.

Protopapa has just recently starting learning sign language, so she has been practicing a lot to make sure she got it right. Many of the students were nervous, but excited at the same time. They have been practicing everywhere they went to perfect their performances.

“I’ve never done anything like this before in my entire life,” said sixth-grader Jadin Adamczak who sang “Lost Boy,” by Ruth B. “It’s been quite the experience.”

At the end of the show all of the students took the stage to sing and dance to “Feel this Moment.”

The PTA awarded all of the children with a plaque as a way to thank them and congratulate them on their performances.
