Visit a local nature center this spring

Many people living in a city environment think of green space as a commodity like those of us in a rural environment think of the soybeans and corn growing in our field.
There is value in green space, and the Mahoning and Shenango valleys have a goldmine of public properties to enjoy.
There are many township parks, city parks, county metroparks, and various other wildlife and/or recreation areas.
Providing outdoor recreation and outdoor learning for local residents and visitors to the Valleys is a large part of many of these properties’ missions.
One such place for hands-on learning is the Trumbull County Agriculture and Family Education Center in Cortland.
The center, often referred to as the Ag Center by those who frequent the facility, houses local, state, and federal entities that work in agriculture, conservation and public education.
Visitors to the Ag Center can see what the USDA Farm Service Agency, USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service, Ohio State University Extension, and Trumbull Soil and Water Conservation District do.
The Ag Center has developed and continues to foster its grounds to better suit the needs of residents and visitors.
It has its own website at www.agcenter.co.trumbull.oh.us, and there are links to the individual agencies for more information on their programs and events.
Other locations in our local area to visit include Trumbull County Metroparks, Mill Creek Metroparks, Kyle Woods, and Beaver Creek Wildlife Education Center.
Most parks, preserves and nature centers have websites that list the amenities and programs available to visitors.
Kyle Woods in Canfield is a favorite of birders.
Clarence Darrow Metropark, part of the Trumbull County Metroparks system, offers a popular disc (Frisbee) golf course.
Ford Nature Education Center in Youngstown is a well-known Mill Creek Metroparks facility, but don’t forget to visit the other properties as well.
Yellow Creek Park offers diverse recreational opportunities and is the site of the historic Hopewell Furnace.
For a day of adventure in the great outdoors – from wildlife exhibits to great trails, birding and more – just search the internet for a day away from it all without leaving the area.
